Windows 10: Audio recording problem

I'm sure this has been discussed before but...

I have more than 40 years of working on and with computers so I've already tried the common solutions to this.

I have a Windows 10 computer which updates automatically when MicroSoft sends out an update.

I'm digitizing my record collection, something I've been working on for several years. Up to last week everything was working fine.

The audio comes out of the line out port on the stereo and goes into the computer via the built in line input port. From there, when things

are working correctly it gets digitized and stored on the hard drive.

About a week ago I noticed that the audio was starting to sound muddy. And a few days later I started to get an error message when I tried to record.

I got a similar message on both of the programs I was using. Undefined external error. Sometimes with the mention of error -9999.

The audio is coming in to the computer since it comes out of the speakers but something seems to be blocking it from the recording software.

I use two different programs, Adobe Audition 1.0 because I've been using it for a long time and am comfortable with it, and Audacity as a backup. Both

programs give similar error messages.

If I unplug the non-existent microphone all of the sound goes away. Yes I am sure that the lines are in the correct ports.

I tried installing an add-on sound card SoundBlaster but that provided no help with the problem.

I've run out of ideas so any help will be greatly appreciated.

• Select Recording Audio.
• Follow the steps to troubleshoot Recording Audio.

  Small icons.
• Go to Troubleshooting > Hardware and Sound >

From what you have mentioned, I would suggest you to try these steps to see if it resolves the issue

Method 1: Hardware Troubleshoot

Windows 10 has a built-in troubleshooter to check and fix issues with recording. I would suggest you to run this troubleshooter to check if the issue is with your recording.

Refer these steps:

• Press Windows key +X, select
  Control panel
• Change the view by option on the top right to
  Large icons
• Click on troubleshooting and click on the
  view all option on the left panel
• Run the Recording Audio troubleshooter

I suggest you to install all the latest audio and Display drivers from the manufacturer web site and install.
