Windows 10: Touchpad won't turn off. Disable feature is grayed out?

Hello! I've been trying to turn off my touchpad because it gets in the way of my typing. It often causes me to make errors of which I have to spend more time fixing than actually typing. I have consulted several different sites and even checked on the Microsoft forum for this issue as well. Maybe this is an issue of my misunderstanding, but I don't understand why I can't disable my touchpad. One way I attempted to work around it was permanently having my touchpad disabled until it updated, however somehow it turned back on and I'm having more problems with it than ever! I don't know if the computer type matters, but I have an ASUS computer with Windows 10. Is there a way I can unlock the disable device feature for my computer?

Edit: I had done a restart while updating my touchpad to see if that would help and now my touchpad won't show up on my device manager. I'm not sure what to do from here.

Thanks for trying I downloaded driver for touchpad, followed the steps you listed but it did not solve the problem - When I get to the last tab for the software, there is no checkbox for "disable touchpad if mouse is attached." I can completely disable the
touchpad by system, and you, advised against this so at least I had the warning not to completely disable touchpad. I have tried the other options suggested but to no avail. Frustrating!

I suggest you to follow the below steps and check if it helps:

• Go to Mouse Properties via Control Panel.
• Touchpad, from where you can simply turn off the touchpad and save.
• If you do not see this option in the Mouse Properties menu, it could only mean that you do not have the touchpad driver installed on your laptop.

Download and install the latest drivers from the manufacturer’s website and check if you can disable.
