When I try and either rename a file, I get a message that the file name I specified was not valid or too long. All I am doing is changing a single digit so I know the file was updated?

Can't open or rename file (name is too long) WTF?

More necro fun..... Just had the same problem.

CMD doesn't work either BTW. I get the same error, but within CMD.

Here's how I fixed it... I can't move or rename the file, but if I right click on it, email to recipient is an option. So I emailed the file to myself. Once I received the email, instead of just saving it with the same file name, I did a save as and saved it with a shorter file name.

    I can't rename files in Windows 10

Method 2 worked for me! (Method 1 said there wasn't any issues)

I had upgraded from 8.1 to Window 10 a few weeks ago, and only today was having issues where I wasn't able to rename my files and folders in File Explorer. I could click on the file, get it ready to rename, but when it came to typing in the file name, my
keyboard wasn't working. I couldn't change them through Properties either. Followed the steps for Method 2 and all is well now. Thanks!
