Windows 10: Reboot when trying to wake up from sleep

I have a Lenovo 330S 15ARR since last October, Windows 10 v1909. Sleeping and waking from sleep was working fine. Since a couple of months, I have the following problem.

I noticed that when I try to wake the pc from sleep, it acts like I rebooted. I did some testings and I discovered something weird.

I put the pc to sleep, it wakes up successfully. I put the pc back to sleep again, and when I try to wake it from sleep, it reboots. Basically, every second time the pc tries to wake up, it fails.


Checked the event viewer for critical and error events, after each wake from sleep attempt there is always an error event with EventID:41, Source:Kernel-Power. I also found an error event with EventID:16, Source:Kernel-Boot every now and thenrelated to hybernate. So the problem also occur with hybernate.

What I tried is:

check and reset power setting to default

update drivers

fresh start

and a number of other solutions found in Microsoft and Lenovo forum


The only workaround I found is to change power plan to never sleep.

Any help is greatly appreciated

Reboot when trying to wake from sleep

My Dell XPS 18 laptop originally came with Windows 8, I updated to 8.1, and then 10. Sleeping and waking from sleep was working fine. About a month ago I upgraded the HDD to an SSD. I installed Windows 10 clean on the blank SSD. My computer still goes
to sleep fine, but every time I try to wake from sleep, it acts like I rebooted.

I have the latest drivers (as part of the clean install), and verified I have the latest BIOS from Dell. I've searched online for problems with reboot when waking from sleep, but none of the info I've found has helped me solve my problem.

Looking in the event viewer for critical and error events, after each wake from sleep attempt there is always an Error event with EventID:16, Source:Kernel-Boot. Followed immediately by a Critical event with EventID:41, Source:Kernel-Power, TaskCategory63).

I've uploaded three fresh .dmp files that I just now created by sleeping, then trying to wake from sleep. I've also included an .nfo file generated from MsInfo32, and also three .evtx files (from the Event Viewer) showing the EventID 16 & 41 from the same
time as each of the .dmp files. All 7 files are available here.

My unsatisfactory workaround is that I changed my power plan to never sleep. Which means when I'm not plugged in and not using for a while, I have to totally shutdown, and then restart when plugged in again.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you for posting your reply. Apologize for the delay in response.

I suggest you to check which devices are configured to wake up the computer from sleep by following the steps below:

• Right click on Start icon and select Command Prompt (Admin).
• Type the command line below:

Powercfg /devicequery wake_armed

3. Check if the devices (Keyboard, Mouse, Ethernet cable) are listed.

If the system is not going to sleep and going to Hybernate, the only option to wake up is to press the Power button.

Computer reboots instead of wakes from sleep

This made no difference. Upon trying to wake the computer, it goes into BIOS. The Windows boot drive is absent in the BIOS boot order list, so I have to turn the computer off, then reboot. Upon booting, any windows that were open prior to sleep are now
closed (i.e., it is a cold boot, not a wake from sleep).
