  1. Start Menu Issues

Hey everyone, sysadmin here. My users (and now even IT staff) have been running into an issue more and more frequently regarding the start menu and the search feature not working.

It started around May, and we generally keep our Windows updates a month or so delayed for testing and such, especially on our virtual environment. First it was one or two users , and it has since become just over a dozen machines. Prior to today, it was only on our VDI’s but we received word of a physical machine having the issue now also

Having scoured the Google for solutions, some dating back to 2015 nothing has worked. We’ve looked at the Windows updates, no common update. We looked at GPO’s but even in different OU’s or even Computers with no GPO applied, it is broken.

We are running Win10 LTSC which has no Windows Store or Cortana. When the issues kicks up, we also see wsappx running and using an abundance of CPU. This service isn’t running where the start menu works. From reading about this, it is related to Store features, despite no Store on this version.

I am really hoping someone else has a solution for this. I am more than willing to test any potential solution. We have been ripping our hair out for a month now.

    Cheers

EDIT: When clicking the start menu, the curser shows the “blue loading circle “ for a split second. And continue as if something is trying to run or is running in the background.

There, click on Startup and Recovery:

Then in the top menu you will have a choice of OSs. Select the one you want to boot to defaultly and uncheck the box for "Time to display list of operating systems."

That should make it boot into Windows 10 without your intervention.
