  1. Weird behaviour of the HOSTS file not working

Hi, I have problems with my hosts file. First of, I've been editing hosts files for 25 years and i've read all the previous posts about people having issues with the hosts file file endings, formatting, permissions, reg key path, etc etc. I've never had any issues with this before..

I noticed this problem today when editing the hosts file on my Windows 10 1909 Enterprise VM ..

    I added something like:

    8.8.8.8 test

Try to ping or do name resolution for test.. does'nt work.. the thing is the entry is'nt ignored.. if i try to ping "randomname" i'll get the same "Could not find.." error but it takes way loner time DNS/LLMNR/NetBIOS probably, but this goes instant ?...

The VM is member of a domain and if i add "test" to the private DNS zone it resolves ok.. if i then add "test" to the HOSTS file i get "Could not find"..

Indicating that my machine actually finds "test" in the hosts file but won't translate it to an IP-address... and will not continue the name resolution process by adding the dns name suffix..

I have another VM Windows 10 enterprise 1909, works fine.. same with my host-machine also Win 10 1909

I've only managed to replicate this error on a Windows Server 2019 VM.. That is the DC for my private virtual Network wich i use for the VM with the same issue..

I've tried everything.. tested and re-tested.. same result.. only thing in common is that the Win 10 and Win Server 2019 is on the same virtual network and members of the same domain adatum.com.. i have'nt added any GPOs or made any changes..

I'm going to install a new VM from scratch , test to change the hosts file and then join the machine to the domain and se if i can replicate the problem..

    Any sugestions?

    :)

  2. Hosts file editing

I have to jump in and say I use, and have used the host file for years. It's an easy way to take stress off of old name servers. I don't add everything, but major shares I do add to the host file. I've used the host file for some tunneling as well. I try to optimize my network as much as possible and I have a solid network. But Easy Rhino is right as well, you'll want to have everything he suggested as well. *Toast :toast:
