Part 1 - Semaphore Timeout Adventures

Hi everyone! I've recently downloaded a bunch of old .avi files on my computer's HDD. I'd like to move them to an external hard drive. So I select the folder with the files, copy it, and then paste it into my external hard drive. And then... nothing happens. I wait a bit and I'm prompted with the error: 0x80070079: The semaphore timeout period has expired. Alright, that's annoying enough. A bit of googling around tells to reset wireless settings (unrelated?), disable my firewall (still unrelated?), or convert my external drive from FAT32 to NTFS (it already is NTFS).

Well, that stinks but whatever let's think a bit outside the box. Copying from my SSD to the external drive? Nope. From my HDD, to an USB Drive, to the external drive? Haha, no. Zipping it up before transfer? Nada. What about other files then? Well.. that's the thing, other files work. Big ones, small ones. Huh.

    Part 2 - Microsoft Storen't

I ask a friend for help and they suggest we copy the files from the disks using ubuntu through WSL because it's more likely to work. Alright, good! Step 1: setting up the windows features to allow for WSL. Done! Step 2: download Ubuntu from the Microsoft Store. Which.. doesn't exist anymore on my computer - most certainly a careless issue from when I set up my computer and freed myself of the bloatware that comes nicely packed with Windows 10. Woops! A few google searches later, I manage to reinstall it by running Get-AppxPackage -allusers Microsoft.WindowsStore | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"} through PowerShell. And it works! Or... does it? Trying to click Install on the ubuntu page brings up 0x80090010: Something went wrong and your PIN isn't available. It hints me to have a look at Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options, except that over there no such thing as a pin but only "Security Key", "Password", and "Picture Password". I suspect this might have to do with the fact I've disable the login screen on my machine entirely. So.. at this point I can't install ubuntu through the Microsoft Store.

    Part 3 - WSL?

And here I am. No Microsoft Store for me it seems. So I decided to grab ubuntu myself from microsoft's website. I download the file (Ubuntu_2004.2020.424.0_x64.appx), open it, click on "Install", then "Launch". Guess what happens? Nothing. At. All. So using my big brain energy I decide to just open the powershell and run bash - surely that must work right? Well... no. No it doesn't. I get an error that reads: "Windows Subsystem for Linux has no installed distributions.". Upsetting. Some googling later, I find out a bunch of people seem to have this issue! Everyone's fix? Running lxrun /install - obviously, that didn't work on my end either because why the hell not. "lxrun : The term 'lxrun' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet, function, script file, or operable program. Check the spelling of the name, or if a path was included, verify that the path is correct and try again." Lovely.

Conclusion? So.. here's the deal. WSL seems like a good solution, except it doesnt work. So if the issue detailed in Part 1 can be fixed, then that's all I care about. Any details missing I will gladly provide, but really my goal is to stick these files in the external drive somehow. Thanks for reading through!

PS1 - I'm not sure what prompts this to happen but a few minutes after doing all of that I've gotten the following alert window. PS2 - I've repeated all these steps a few times, always cleaning up before restarting to no avail.

    WSL in windows Store

Actually, this is a consumer-oriented forum for general Windows 10 questions.

As WSL concerns mostly developers and Enterprise, I suggest asking there.
