Cannot access local account user folder except through "Desktop"?

    Dear Microsoft Representatives,

I have had my Windows 10 HP Envy for less than a year. When I initially set up my computer, I accidentally made a Microsoft account I've always preferred local accounts. No problem, I then made a local account with Admin privileges. The weird thing I discovered is that in my Windows "user" folder, I have two folders.. one that represents my Microsoft account, and one that represents my local account. I can easily get into the MS user account folder, but my local account folder shows no files, and clicking on it, it fails to open. However, if I go through "Desktop" within Windows, a "human" icon with my local account name appears and I can access files through there. I've never not been able to access my local user accounts on previous computers through the user account folder, and it's bugging me why it would be a problem now. Is there a setting I need to change? Why would that folder be locked and show "empty"? Incidentally, OneDrive is backing up my files, yet it clearly looks like I have files locally, as well, and I have made no changes to OneDrive, in case this information helps.

Thank you so much for your time.

    Sincerely,

    Jo

    :)

  2. Setting New Location Of User Folder to another User Folder

    Hi Renee,

Having an easy access to the Desktop folder can give you a convenience on opening your files. Regarding your concern about the Desktop folder that was moved to the Downloads section, we recommend that you create a new local user or administrator account to
    resolve the issue.

To create a local user or administrator account, follow the steps listed on this
    link
    .

In addition, to move your files from the Downloads folder back to the Desktop folder, we suggest that you manually copy and paste the files to avoid any data loss.

Feel free to post back if you need more help.

  3. cannot access local user accounts

In my desktop computer (windows 7) there were 1 administrator account and two user accounts. All 3 were local user accounts. Every user account had read access to the shared files of the other two accounts. The administrator account had read and write access
to the other two user accounts. There are two more laptops (with one administrator account each) in the house network, and every one of the three computers had access to each others' shared files.

I chose not to install updates during the upgrade, and otherwise I just followed the instructions on the screen. Now the shared files are shown in "network" but they are not accessible. The popup window says: "windows cannot access \\computername\C\users\accountname.
Contact your network administrator to request access". This happens not only between the user accounts of the desktop computer but also between the desktop computer and the other two laptops.

    Can this problem be solved?

    Thanks again.

Cannot access local account user folder except through "Desktop"?

    Cannot access shared network drive

Personally, I wouldnt use Everyone. If anyone hacks into you, they have full access to everything and can demolish everything on your raid. I would rather set up accounts and access separately for each person. That way, I know who did all that damage. In the end with a little extra work, I feel more secure by using Authenticated Users.

    If this helps.
step 1 create non-microsoft account and without email and address without admin rights
step 2 share a drive or folder to specific user account (if Everyone is listed, remove it)
step 3 set security > add Authenticated Users (if more than 1 account) or add specific users
step 3a remove Everyone from list
step 3b uncheck full control and write for all items listed except SYSTEM and Admin account.
step 4 right click Start > Computer Management > System Tools > Shared Folders > Shares ... to verify settings and change anything else. You can also see the number of connections to each share here.
