Can't set M.2 speed on new mobo

    Hi

Well, I've now built my husbands new PC but I do have a little problem. Part of the upgrade included an NVM-e SSD which I was led to believe had to be set up for the speed you wanted it to work at. This I got from a YouTube tutorial where the guy had to set his mobo firmware from x2 to x4 for the M.2 SSD. However, I have the problem that I seem to have no way of changing this setting. I can find very little reference to M.2 SSDs at all other than an option to enable M.2 Optane Genie and this seems to be for setting up a RAID system.

The mobo is an MSI MPG Z390 GAMING Pro CARBON AC and any help on this would be most appreciated. Many thanks.

    Tracey

P.S. I should add that this is the first time I have installed an M.2 SSD.

    :)

M.2 SSD compatibility with MOBO question.

M.2_1 share the same PCI lane so if you install a device in SATA mode on the M.2_1 socket, you can not use SATA_2 port.

Install the M.2 drive on M.2_2 slot. See your manual.
The M.2_2 socket supports M Key and 2242/2260/2280/22110 storage devices (PCIE x4 mode), and supports data transfer speed of up to 32Gb/s.

Overclocking / Undervolting guide for Vega 56 or 64?

    Here's a quick laundry list:

List of software to use for overclocking and testing
    Examples:
Wattman (and how to find and use it, like an overview, including profiles)
Unigine Valley or Heaven (use this for quick testing while changing settings in Wattman and checking for stability / artifacts) ...just suggesting this
How to monitor cores / mem speeds and temps during testing (I've seen screen overlays, and others using GPUz)

    Step-by step overclocking in Wattman
    Fan speeds
    Power limit
    Temp limit
    Voltages
    Core speeds
    Memory speeds

Which M.2 SSD Fits My Motherboard?

Your mobo supports type M. But the problem with your mobo as well as mine (Gigabyte GA-Z97 Gaming 7), it's dependent on the SATA controller and is disabled by default. You'll have to enable it in the BIOS so check your mobo manual. Keep in mind that back then the M.2 speeds are the same as a standard SSD....roughly 550/520 read/write speeds.

To take advantage of the modern M.2 SSD's of 3500/1800 and 5000/3500 read/writes speeds....you'll need a newer mobo that supports Gen 3/4 M.2.That's why I'm not bothered with getting a M.2 now.
