  1. Newbie need help with NTFS security

I'm an newbie IT person handling a small business (14 users) network. They have a file server running Windows Server 2019 Essentials - as far as i was informed to avoid hitting the 20 max allowed connections - as part of a workgroup (no domain) that runs their HR System. They have all files (programs and files) in a public directory with no security at all (???).

What I want to do is create a directory out of the public area and allow the HR program to run (execute, update, create and delete files) while preventing the users to move or delete files by themselves. How should I configure the security for this directory to have it done? All workstations are using Win10 Pro.

Sorry, newbie here still trying to understand how rights work and are related. Read a lot but can't find how to achieve what I'm looking for.

    Thanks for any help.

    :)

  2. xp ntfs permissions erased - help!

NEVER, ever, remove FULL CONTROL permissions in the Access Control Lists/rights priveleges from:

    • Administators Group
    • YOUR local Administrator User
    • SYSTEM
on NTFS rights on your disks (via Explorer.exe rightclick properties menu, security tab) that use that filesystem, OR in the REGISTRY either, via rightclick on HIVES/KEYS permissions popup menu options...

(Sure way to lock yourself out, period, & I have done it myself early on w/ NTFS filesystems &/or the Registry before... only way to learn sometimes, is making mistakes!)

    * Keep this in mind, those of you that start experimenting w/ security @ these 2 levels!

    APK

P.S.=> Leaving them @ FULL POWER, in both areas, usually 9/10 times allows you to get back into your rig (logging on as your LOCAL ADMINISTRATOR USER, to fix it), & make alterations to rights/acl's as needed, to "get it right", eventually... especially when you're still learning/experimenting! apk

what is the difference in fat32 and NTFS HDD formating???

    Pretty accurate listing Silverel.

I personally prefer FAT32. It IS faster than NTFS (there is a small but benchmarkable difference) and also it is much easier to recover from disastrous OS-induced and/or hardware disk crashes simply due to availability of more robust tools and the evident FAT32 approachability.

NTFS's alternate data streams (ADS) is something I find distasteful and an obvious security risk. In fact, if file system security matters to you, or data security in general, you might want to skip Windows operating systems completely and go straight into Unix territory. Seriously, when someone implies NTFS over any other file system (usually FAT32) on the basis of data security I can’t help but laugh.

Primary issue with FAT32 is the file size limit. So if you work with large video files and such I recommend an NTFS partition. (As a supplement of course.)
