Hello,


I am using an external monitor so I am using it like extended monitor.

However on a few occasions I disconnected the HDMI cable and start working only from my laptop no external monitor

At this point all my apps that were working on the external monitor are lost forever there.

I am trying to minimize them I can see them in my toolbar however when I try to open them they are still opening in the extended monitor instead of the only available one.


Strange is even that when I closed them and re open them again in order to start in my 1st monitor they start to the external one that is no longer available so solution is to reboot the laptop but wonder if there is some more nice solution.

Connecting to external monitor

I just upgraded to Windows 10, but am unable to connect my Lenovo X1 Carbon to an external monitor (tried two separate monitors). Before it would automatically detect the monitor, now it only has 1 listed when I go into Settings / Display. I found the "Windows
button + P" option online, but when I highlight Duplicate or Extend I am unable to "select" or "enter" them.

How can I make Windows detect my external monitor? (I am using the same cord that has always worked to connect my monitor before.) Thanks!

Windows 10 upgrade: can no longer connect to an external monitor

As you have tried most of the troubleshooting steps, let us know the following to assist you better:

• What exactly happens when you try to connect to the external display?
• Were you able to see the light on the external monitor (Tuned on/ not)?
• Is there any error message with this issue?

Step 1: As this may look very silly, I suggest you to check if the turned on or not, if it is on let us know the color of the light displayed.

Step 2: I suggest you to remove all the external devices except mouse and keyboard and try to perform clean boot to check if there is any issue with the device and to avoid any third party software conflict.
