Windows 10: Activate Windows message query

I have upgraded Win 7 Pro to Win 10 Pro based on Win 7 Pro licence key obtained from Microsoft 8 years ago. I no longer have key details, but on booting, a message appears in Notifications "Activate Windows. Go to settings".


Settings shows the Product ID in full, but only the last 5 characters of the 25 character Product Key Win 10 OS. This implies that the OS is legally licenced,.


I am able to use the upgraded laptop without restriction or message to "Activate" other than at boot so, as I am unable enter the key, can I ignore the message, or is there a way of locating the key, or a key, to properly activate? I have tried several key-finder programs but none have been able to reveal the key, or one to match the last 5 characters Microsoft indicates in Settings.


I want to give the laptop to my grandson, but not leave him with a later activation problem.

Windows 10 will not activate Error code 0x803F7001

Possibly there can be the problem with Microsoft activation Server, so your Windows 10 is not activated. In this scenario, you need to wait and verify if it is the issue from Microsoft’s side. But if you are getting error code 0x803f7001, you can also try these steps:

1. Open Settings app. Then go to Update and security > Activation screen > Change product.
2. Type your Windows edition product key and click Next.
3. You’ll get We couldn’t activate Windows error message.
4. Retry steps 1-3 then type your 25-characters unique product key.
5. Wait for the process to complete, Windows 10 is activated.
