  1. WU automatically started downloading and installing the "Preview" update, ignoring WU...

Today I decided to apply the July Cumulative updates.

    Configuration:

    • Windows 10 Pro 1909
    • Windows Update configured with the Group Policy of "Configure Automatic Updates" set to "2 - Notify for download and auto install" (Registry settings for AUOptions reflect that - they also have value 2)
    • Quality updates defer: 0 days - think this is not needed because of the policy configuration

    Steps:

    • Hit the "Download" button to apply the 2020-07 Cumulative updates which were being offered for quite some weeks (but which the above-mentioned group policy prevented their automatic installation, giving me the control)
    • Updates were successfully installed, and after the reboot, I opened Windows Update again and clicked on the "Check for updates" button to see if anything new is available now.
    • It was now that the "2020-07 Cumulative Update Preview For .NET bla bla (KB4562900) began downloading and installing without any Download prompt, expected because of having the group policy configured as described above.

Has anyone encountered this behavior or knows what's missing or what did I do wrong that the Preview update began installing without notifying and asking for my prompt to begin downloading?

Windows 10 windows update (WU) failing & manual access to WU not user-friendly

I had an uncomplicated upgrade to Windows 10 on my Acer laptop so the upgrade is NOT the issue but efficient use of WU (Windows Update) is.

    1) Finding WU in the Windows 10 user interface is ridiculously difficult (I am a professional I.T. person) and when it is found using a manual exchange with WU (i.e. checking for updates is equally difficult and there seems to be no way of doing the old
easy "check for updates" and watching progress simply.

    2) I am advised that there are several updates available but some will download and not progress automatically to install and even will not install with manual intervention.

    3) A restart does not improve the situation.

The whole (and very important) WU is a mess in Windows 10 and urgently needs reviewing by Microsoft.

  3. WU not finding KB4512508

It's not that I am having trouble installing KB4512508. It is not listed in WU when I view update history. Check for updates does not find it and says I am current. All three machines came with Win 10 installed and have been running it for at least a couple
of years if not more. MS says this is a critical fix and the WU will automatically install it yet it has not on the two machines for the past two weeks despite WU checking for updates daily.

System info from one of the machines:

OS Name Microsoft Windows 10 Pro

    Version 10.0.17763 Build 17763

    Other OS Description Not Available

    OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation

    System Name VULCANHIGHCOUNC

    System Manufacturer Dell Inc.

    System Model Studio XPS 435MT

    System Type x64-based PC

    System SKU

    Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz, 2668 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s)

    BIOS Version/Date Dell Inc. 1.0.1, 10/21/2008

    SMBIOS Version 2.5

    Embedded Controller Version 255.255

    BIOS Mode Legacy

    BaseBoard Manufacturer Dell Inc.

    BaseBoard Product 0R849J

    BaseBoard Version A00

    Platform Role Desktop

    Secure Boot State Unsupported

    PCR7 Configuration Binding Not Possible

    Windows Directory C:\WINDOWS

    System Directory C:\WINDOWS\system32

    Boot Device \Device\HarddiskVolume2

I guess I can just wait for WU to install KB4512941 when it is released. I don't use RDP so it may not even be enabled on my machines but the press I've read on this fix seems to indicate that is irrelevant. So much for relying on WU to keep my machines
    current and safe.

As for upgrading to 1903, Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant tells me I am at the latest version of Windows.

I have 370GB free disk space, no SD cards and the only USB port used is for the mouse. I do have the printer connected thru a USB port on the KVM switch but disconnecting it and rebooting changes nothing. I do have one external hard drive that is ethernet
    connected thru the router.

I try Intels' Driver and Support Assistant but its website says "there's something wrong".
I've configured my Startups and System Configurations to fully run, still the update refuses to...update.
Never had a problem with updating before.
I Bing-ed the update and wound up at the Microsoft Update catalog and saw the update...several of the same one.

So close yet so far. What should I do? *Sad
