Windows 10 2004: Storage Spaces data loss fixed ahead of wider rollout

Microsoft has finally published an optional update to address at least four major bugs in Windows 10 version 2004, including Storage Spaces file corruption issue where the disk-failure protection feature is broken.

As we reported in June, users claimed that Windows 10 May 2020 Update could corrupt your files when you use the Storage Spaces ‘parity spaces’ feature, while others noted problems with disk defragmentation or Drive Optimize tool.

Windows 10 version 2004 bug corrupted partitions and damaged files in Storage Spaces’ party spaces and some users noted that their 20TB of data show up as ‘RAW’. Others reported multiple errors when attempting to open the Storage Spaces management from Settings or Control Panel.

While the problem with Drive Optimize tool remains unpatched and unacknowledged, Microsoft says it has included fixes for problems affecting Storage Spaces in Windows 10 Build 19041.423 (KB4568831) optional update. This patch also allows Windows built-in data protection software to work as intended.

Windows 10 KB4568831 is an optional patch and it won’t install automatically. If you don’t install the patch now, you’ll get Storage Space and other fixes in next Patch Tuesday update, which takes place on August 11.

You may still see a compatibility hold on the Windows 10 version 2004 if Microsoft determines that your machine uses Storage Spaces or older drivers.

The current status of the upgrade block

In addition to Storage Spaces, Microsoft says the following issues have been resolved or mitigated in this optional update:

    • Issues with devices using older drivers of Nvidia GPU.
    • Problems when connecting to more than one Bluetooth device, such as a mouse, keyboard or headset.
    • Variable refresh rate may not work on devices with Intel iGPU.

While these issues have resolved or mitigated, Microsoft says compatibility hold for devices with above issues will be lifted in mid-August.

These fixes will allow Microsoft to finally expand the rollout of Windows 10 version 2004 and Windows Server version 2004.

  2. Any way to downgrade ver. of MS Storage spaces volume w/o data loss?

    1. Install Windows 1607 & 1709 dual boot system
    2. Connect two free disks
    3. Boot into 1607
    4. Create storage pool, assign two free disks, create two-way mirror volume
    5. Copy data to new volume
    6. Reboot into 1709
    7. Upgrade your Storage Space pool to gain new features as MS suggests
    8. Reboot into 1607
    9. Your Storage Space configuration looks now as in the picture, volume is inaccessible
    10. Notice that doing step 7 was not the smartest idea, data are now accessible only from Windows 1709.

Question: Is it possible to simply revert Storage Spaces metadata back to version 1607? Answer: No. It is necessary to backup data, destroy upgraded pool, create new pool & mirror in Windows 1607, and restore data.

  3. Storage Space - Simple Resiliency Volume corrupted by Windows 10 2004 update

    Hi Anthony,

Reset/Reinstall does not work (as expected).

I have tried to access my Storage Space volume from freshly installed Windows 10 Enterprise 2004: the volume is seen as RAW.

I have also tried to access my volume using Windows 10 Enterprise 1909: the volume is not seen/detected at all. This was expected as the Storage Space system has been upgraded with 2004 update.

Please note that the initial MS support page has been updated and a new KB created: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us...teps-for-issue-with-some-parity-storage-space

Clearly, the 2004 update broke my Storage Space volume (simple resiliency).

    In this article (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us...teps-for-issue-with-some-parity-storage-space),
it is stated that the problem does not affect Simple Storage Spaces.
    This is not true!

As ReFS has been removed from Windows 10 Pro since 1709 and is only available for Windows 10 Enterprise, I guess few Windows 10 users will report this issue. Still, this is a fact: as of today, a Windows update corrupted 4TB of user data !!

ReFS is also affected by Windows 2004 bug. As stated in a previous post, there is a memory leak with Windows\System32\drivers\refs.sys and Windows\System32\drivers\refsv1.sys
which are clearly related to storage (and ReFS was used for my "now RAW" volume)

How can I report this problem officially to MS? I have been given a link to paid support but I think it is shocking to pay for a bug that has been deployed by the same company that should fix it!

Should I consider my data forever lost?

This is completely crazy when I think the same storage space system is used for enterprise class storage such as S2D. As sysadmin, I am really worried about MS reliablity here.

    Thanks!

  4. Windows 10 2004: Storage Spaces data loss fixed ahead of wider rollout

GMail Accounts Get 3 GB of Storage Space

When GMail was first unleashed in 2004, its 1GB of storage space quickly put it ahead of the competition. Now, GMail is looking to further that previous lead, by booting storage space up to 3GB. The reason behind GMail's new storage space is a simple lack of space in some GMail accounts. Google saw a problem, and quickly found a way to fix it. Google Apps will also have storage space increased to 3GB, and Premier Google Apps members will get between 10 and 25GB of storage space.

Any way to downgrade ver. of MS Storage spaces volume w/o data loss?: Sure create a volume image and then restore that image to a single drive/ SSD, I would recommend Macrium Reflect to do this since it has worked for me with RAID Volumes in the past. 120787
