    Eek. Twice now I have initiated a custom scan and it "froze" about half way through on the C: drive; the "files scanned" number got stuck so it was not ticking over even though I left it for a few minutes nothing else was running.


    An offline scan detected nothing, however that appears to to a subset of a scan, not all files ?


    PC is Win10x64 Pro 2004 AU language, cpu 3900X, 32Gb Ram, the C: drive is a Samsung Pro 970 and other disks are WD-Blacks.


    1. Is there any way to tell what files it is freezing at ? Or otherwise find out what is going on ?


    2. Is there any way to tell Offline Scan to scan every file on every disk in the system ?

    Please answer these question to assist you better.

    Do you get any error message?

    As an initial troubleshooting step I suggest you to restart your computer and check if that helps. Also check the status of the internet connection. If the issue persists follow the Methods below.

    Method 1: Run the Update Troubleshooter on the computer.

    Windows 10 has a built-in troubleshooter to check and fix issues with Update. I would suggest you to run this troubleshooter to check if the issue is with your Windows update.

    Refer these steps:

    • Press Windows key +X, select Control panel.
    • Change the view by option on the top right to Large icons.
    • Click on Troubleshooting and click on the view all option on the left panel.
    • Run the Windows Update troubleshooter.
    • Restart the system and check if the issue is resolved.

    If Method 1 doesn’t help, try Method 2.

    Method 2: Reset the Windows Update Components

    Refer the link below for the steps to manually reset the Update components and check if it helps.

    Thanks for posting your query on Microsoft Community.

    This issue might occur if you have set any task scheduler for Windows Defender.

    I suggest you to delete the task for Windows defender and check if it helps.

    Follow the below steps:


    • Search and open Schedule tasks.

    • In the left-hand menu, open the Task Scheduler Library, then select
      Microsoft >Windows >Windows Defender.

    • Double-click Windows Defender Scheduled Scan.

    • Select the Triggers panel, then select Delete.
