Slow HDD read and write speeds

    Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

We will require a few more information from you to help you further with the issue. Please reply with the following details:

    • In which device are you facing this issue?
    • Are you using an external HDD or internal HDD?
    • Are you getting the read and write speed issue on any particular application?

However, you can Disk Defragment on your computer to optimize the drive. To run Disk Defragment please follow the steps from the article

    Defragment your Windows 10 PC
    .

Alternatively, you can check for the read and write speed of the HDD in task manager. Please follow the steps mentioned below to check the read and write speed of the hard drive:

    1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc key together on the keyboard.
    2. Click on Performance tab.
    3. Click on Disk 0.
    4. You will find the Read speed and
      Write speed
at the bottom of the window.

    Hope it helps.

Please reply with the status of the issue, we will be glad to help you further.

  3. HDD disappear when used

I have strange problem with Win 10. I have SSD and HDD setup. When I try to copy to HDD, it copy some files and then the drive disapperar form Task manager (not from the explorer) and speed drop to 0. It affect even external HDDs connected via USB 3.0
and even network HDD.. After restart disk is not visible, only thing that helps is turn off PC and turn off power switch. After it the HDD acts as normal, but when i try again to copy (other) data, it write some of them than again, speed drop to 0 and HDD
    disappeared.

HDD write speed periodically drops to 0 while copying - is this normal?

Periodical performance drops and high HDD usage Windows10

Usually my system performs fine. However, periodically, there are temporary performance drops. Basically the Task Manager shows 100% HDD usage and the culprits invariably turn out to be system related processes like:

    • MsMpEng.exe Antimalware Service Executable
    • AppXSvc AppX Deployment Service (AppXSVC)
    • svchost.exe Service Host: Superfetch
    • ntoskrnl.exe System
    • CompatTelRunner.exe Microsoft Compatibility Telemetry
    • And others.

I don't what is Windows doing - scanning my computer for threats with Windows Defender, downloading and installing updates, defragging HDD - but whatever it is I hope its not going kill my HDD anytime soon and can Windows please do all of this while I'm afk and certainly not when I play League of Legends!

I can't help but notice Linux Mint doesn't experience these periodical performance drops. This persists for a few years already, I'm frankly fed up with this.

Can anything be done to alleviate this issue?
