Microsoft account security code - WHY?

    Thanks for the reply Greg.

"If you turn on two-step verification, you’ll get a security code to your email, phone, or authenticator app every time you sign in on
a device that isn't trusted. When two-step verification is turned off, you will only have to verify your identity with security codes periodically, when
there might be a risk to your account security."

    Overkill.

As Two-Step verification has never been turned on, I presume MS thinks every time I log into access pages on https://account.microsoft.com/ pages I'm a risk to my account. Even from computers listed in the 'Devices" tab of those pages. Even though I have
to supply my MS password to get to those pages.

Are you suggesting I turn two-step verification on, which is what I don't need?

    Account verification when overseas

    Hi Tom,

To answer your first question was asking about the Microsoft Authenticator App and it requiring cell service. I don't believe this is necessary and all you would require is an internet connection which most hotels provide. For this a phone is not necessary,
tablets can be used if you have one. If you sign into your account often and receive this message, it may be worth investing in a device which can use this app.

Now, regarding your question on the two-step verification. Turning off two-step verification does indeed stop the prompt asking for a phone number or email. As I previously said that it does make your account more vulnerable if someone finds out your password.
However, if you are trying to access sensitive information such as changing your password etc... this would still require your phone, even with two-step verification turned off, just to be sure that it is really you. Unfortunately printing out codes won't
work for this since each code is generated randomly by Microsoft and then sent to you.

In answer to your second reply, you received this prompt because you were trying to access sensitive information on a computer not trusted. This happens sometimes when you try to access sensitive information. The recovery code which you were talking about
is not related with signing in and is only used when you have forgotten your password to your account. Also, you suggested using the link titled "I have a code", this only works if Microsoft has only recently sent you the code.

So, in conclusion, you should be able to access most features of your Microsoft account with "two-step verification" disabled. If you need to access sensitive information such as payment, passwords etc... you need to either:

    • Use the Microsoft Authenticator App on a tablet or smartphone.
    • Be able to sign in to your Gmail account to find the email Microsoft have sent you.
    • Sort out some way to obtain a phone number where Microsoft can text you the code

Some of those may not work for you but others may.

Please don't hesitate to ask me any other questions about this so we can hopefully get this issue sorted.

    Hope I have helped,

    Sam.
