  1. Unable to eject USB drives due to Win Defender

    Win 10 1909 Build:18363.859

Using Win 'Safe Remove' on my external USB drives no longer works due to an 'in use' failure. I installed "USB Safely Remove" and it displays a "cannot be stopped right now" failure:

    Process Name & File name:
    System
    f:\$Extend\$RmMetadata\$Txf:$130:$INDEX_ALLOCATION

    MsMpEng.exe
    f:

Per a google search "MsMpEng.exe" is a Windows Defender program. I regularly remove/install drives so it's quite an annoyance to go through the process required.

Nothing I can find online has helped eliminate this issue. How do I get Defender to stop "Protecting" my USB drives?

    Thanks for any assistance,

    Tom

  3. Unable to eject USB

I find that some are more troublesome than others, however; look in the Disk drives on device manager, right-click on the USB stick, select properties, policies tab and click quick removal.

I've found this works more often than not but not always. Obviously it is best to close all related windows and apps accessing the device first.

  4. Unable to eject USB drives due to Win Defender

Removing a USB drive without 'ejecting' first

    Hello,

Normally I eject a USB drive within Windows 10 before unplugging the hardware. I once understood garbage can be left behind when not ejecting first.

Sometimes ejecting don't work because Windows says it's in use (for no reason according to me). In those cases I shut down Windows or I unplug the USB drive without ejecting first.

    • Is this garbage being left behind in Windows or on the USB drive?
    • How can I remove this garbage afterwards?
    Thanks in advance
