The read operation from the volume shadow copy on the source failed. 0x80780029 when trying...

I'm trying to create a system image, as I've gotten a new SSD and want to use the image to save time on backing up specific files, programs, settings, etc.

However, when I try to create a system image I get the following error:

    The backup failed.

The read operation from the volume shadow copy on the source failed. 0x80780029

    Additional Information:

    STATUS_WAIT_1 0x80070001

Now, I've tried troubleshooting this problem through quite a few various methods from looking around at people having the similar issue.

I'm not 100% sure if this is the problem, but I'd like to eliminate it as a possibility. But, it seems my OS and my EFI System Partition are on different drives. I'm not entirely sure how this happened.

As you can see in this image. My OS is on a 120GB SSD and for some reason my 240GB SSD just seems to be one big EFI System Partition. To test this I removed my 240GB SSD and tried to boot just from the C: drive and received a BCD error upon bootup, so I'm guessing the important boot files are on the 240GB SSD and not on my C: drive. Could this be what's causing me issues during the system image backup?

I have tried relocating the EFI partition to my C: drive but that doesn't seem possible as I cannot partition the drive without formatting it.

So I figured the next best thing would be to see if I could just get my C: drive to boot without the need of the other drive, so I can keep the other drive unplugged and run a system image backup to see if I still receive errors.

    Things I've already tried:

    • Running windows auto repair from Windows RE
    • Running SFC and CHKDSK on both drives
    • Tried bootrec /FixMBR, /FixBoot, and /RebuildBcd
    • Tried bcdboot c:\windows /s c:
    • Tried various other commands in Windows RE CMD too many to list
    • Made sure Volume Shadow Copy and Windows Backup services are both running and set to automatic

Any insight or anything else I should try? Am I just out of luck from messing up my EFI System partition?

    Thanks for your time!

    :)

  2. Windows 10 Pro Create SYSTEM IMAGE fails: Backup failed as shadow copy on source volume got deleted.

This week System Image Backup fails -- it worked last week. Something changed. A system update?

    Here's the message:

Backup failed as shadow copy on source volume got deleted. This might caused by high write

activity on the volume. Please retry the backup. If the issue persists consider increasing shadow

copy storage using 'VSSADMIN Resize ShadowStorage' command. (0x80780169)

I'm not competent to understand the above, nor to do what it suggests.

I'm running without a system backup. Somebody please help!

Control Panel\Backup and Restore (Windows 7)\Back up now fails if shadow copy is included

0x80780029 is a read error, a problem reading the shadow copy on the source

in your other thread you mention 0x80780172 which is "no items specified to backup"

this could be errors on the source disk, but windows image backup can longer be relied on.

I take into account utility is being discontinued. Let assume there is misconfiguration due manual changes or general failure.
