Windows 10: Windows 10 clone SSD to external HDD

Hey folks

Have cloned my Windows 10 OS from an internal SSD to a USB HDD using Macrium Reflect Free. Cloning from GPT to GPT.

On boot, I get a BSOD with "INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE".

Have loaded up the recovery command prompt and Diskpart shows 4 volume total. One labelled recovery, another labelled C, another labelled D (all NTFS) and final FAT32 formatted volume that's hidden and only 99MB in size (not sure what this is).

I have tried the below, which has made no difference, but the D volume does contain an EFI folder, which itself contains a Boot folder and a Microsoft folder.

bcdboot c:\windows /s d: /f UEFI

For clarity, I have disabled secure boot and am selecting the boot device manually on each boot. The drive appears as "Windows Boot Manager" under the UEFI section. The USB HDD does appear under legacy boot, but the device fails to boot at all when selecting that.

Any assistance appreciated! Hopefully somebody has previously dealt with this issue.

Clone HDD to a SSD

I'm planing to upgrade my new laptop HDD to SSD while using my HDD as a storage media on my laptop. My laptop came with windows 10 Home OEM. If I cloned the HDD will the windows be activated after I
cloned or will it be deactivated?? And what happend to other activated softwares like MS Office and Antivirus Softwares???

Hello,

If I clone HDD having windows 10 to SSD then will it also copy the drivers and all?

I am thinking to use cloning software available on internet like EaseUS, Partionwizard, etc.

Can anyone confirms that If I clone then will I get everything as it is there in HDD with driver and when I boot SSD then do I need to reinstall the driver again?

Hi Nick

The only real way to do this successfully is clone everything onto the SSD, then boot from that SSD and move your user folders (Documents . . .etc to the HDD

Alternatively, move all your documents to another folder on that HDD, then omit that from the cloning operation, you can then clone the drive, and later link back into those documents in that folder . . .
