  1. A (hopefully) non-confusing guide on how to watch HDR video files in Windows 10.

So i've gotten a HDR TV recently and spend hours trying to figure out how to get it to play HDR movies from my PC. There's many confusing guides out there with conflicting information, so i'm trying to make a guide that wont leave you confused as to whether it even worked here:

    • 1. Enable HDR on your TV / Monitor, on my Samsung Q80R this is called "Input Signal Plus".
    • 2. To activate HDR in Windows right click on the Desktop and select "Display Settings", now activate "Play HDR games and apps".

To get a brighter desktop you can select "Windows HD Color settings" and turn the slider above the two pictures at the bottom all the way to the right, however this step is completely optional and will have no effect on HDR content.

    • 3. Install the K-Lite codec pack and only select MPC-HC x64 as your preferred player when asked, you can leave the rest of the settings as is.

Or alternatively install MPC-HC, LAV Filters, and MadVR in that order.

    • 4. In MPC-HC go to View -> Options -> Playback -> Output -> and under "DirectShow Video" select "MadVR". Now close MPC-HC for the change to take effect.
    • 5. Opening any video file in MPC-HC will now open the MadVR tray icon, right click the icon and select "Edit MadVR Settings", now go to Devices -> "your monitors name" -> HDR and select "passthrough HDR to Display" and check the "send HDR metadata to the display" checkbox.

Alternatively, go to C:\Program Files (x86)\K-Lite Codec Pack\Filters\madVR (or wherever you installed MadVR) and open madHcCtrl.exe to open the MadVR tray icon manually.

    • 6. Done, MPC-HC will now play HDR content.

Additionally to check if the video file you're playing is HDR, press CTRL + J in MPC-HC and look for BT.2020, if its not HDR it will usually say BT.709.

Alternatively you can play with the slider in "Windows HD Color settings" while the video is playing, if its changing brightness its not HDR content, HDR content will always look the same no matter what the slider is set to.

Deactivate "Play HDR games and apps" again if you want to watch SDR content/play games without HDR support, you can leave the slider in "Windows HD Color settings" all the way to the right as it has no effect when HDR is deactivated in Windows.

On tonemapping: First off most TVs don't do tonemapping, and while many monitors will tonemap SDR content in HDR mode, to a layman there's no real way of identifying whether or not its done correctly, results may vary from model to model, so its usually best to just deactivate HDR if you want to watch SDR content the way the creators had in mind.

HDR on HDR monitor causes issue on secondary, non-HDR monitor

I have an Aorus AD27QD (HDR) monitor as my primary display and an ultrawide 34UM88-P (Non-HDR) as my secondary. If HDR is enabled in windows and I go to a full screen video on the non-HDR monitor after a few seconds it will flicker blue then become severely
washed out. Coming out of full screen fixes this. If HDR is not enabled full screen shows the colors perfectly normally.

Secondarily, with windows HDR on on the Aorus, the colors dim pretty drastically. HDR content great but anything that isnt HDR is dim enough to make me question if my brightness is turned down. (Its not, its 90/100). The white of a plain browser window
seems so dim its nearly grey. I also tested this on what I know is a particularly vibrant (non-HDR) . HDR on? Terrible and muted. HDR off? Bright and vibrant.

I have played with in-monitor settings, nvidia control panel, factory reset of monitor, basically everything I can think of. Everything points to it being a windows issue.

I also tried out the suggestions from this post. And it pointed me to this
    set of OS release notes
which didnt solve my issue either.

I could really use some help because I am really feeling like I wasted my money on this monitor.

    PC:

    i5 7600k

    GTX 1080ti

    16GB 3000Hz Corsair RAM

Windows, CPU and GPU on latest drivers available.

    Monitors:

    LG 34UM88-P (HDMI)

    Aorus AD27QD (DisplayPort)

Windows 10 HDR problems in full screen.

    Hello moderator

    1. Its all the games I own that don't support HDR10. Basically when I full screen on a non-HDR game, the screen goes black for a few seconds and HDR gets disabled and all the colors looked washed out (Like its in SDR)

I took 2 screenshots, One is in window mode, the other is in full screen

Windowed mode (HDR on) : Imgur

Full screen mode (HDR off) : Imgur

    2. Yes SDR looks washed out. I want to play my games in full screen and in HDR. Playing in windowed mode is a nightmare

    3. I know because the monitor goes black for a few seconds and all the colors look washed out (As shown in the screenshots)

Sadly the fixes did not work A (hopefully) non-confusing guide on how to watch HDR video files in Windows 10. :(

I updated the GPU drivers via GeForce Experience app.

My Monitor does support 4k HDR10

I tried lower the resolution and the refresh rate but that did not work.

Here is a video of my problem

    YouTube Link :

    Time Stamps :

0:00 HDR mode is on everything looks fine (In the video, when it looks high contrast, that means HDR is on)

0:35 I full screen the game. If you notice the high contrast is no longer there, the colors are washed out

0:46 I disable full screen and HDR mode is back on

*HDR looks high contrast, Ignore that, that's just the video itself.

    Im also using windows 10 64bit 1809
