Windows 10: Bitlocker brakes and hangs due to faulty HDD drive

I started bitlocker encryption on two HDD drives. 2TB one finshed long time ago, but 500GB is still going and seems stuck 2 days now. It seems to be hanging on about 23%.


I also get a warning from a HDD monitoring monitors SMART status. The smaller HDD D: has some unstable sectors and read failures. The drive is accessible I can navigate to it but extremely slow.


Also the system is unstable and some programs do not open. Unfortunately I had a pagefile.sys on that D drive which I assume might be related to system stability. But the pagefile seems to have been migrated to C automatically after reboot. System shows that pagefile is now on C, but the pagefile.sys is still on D drive.


I tried executing `manage-bde -pause D:` but it only shows Bitlocker Configuration Tool version info and hangs.


Any ideas how to brake this process of encryption? I tried going into safemode which makes the system more stable, but Bitlocker tools don't seem to work in safemode.

I suggest you to perform below mentioned steps to disable BitLocker.

To disable BitLocker I would suggest you try the following steps and see if it helps.

• 
  Press Windows key + X and click on
  Control Panel.
  
• 
  Change View by from Category
  to Large Icons/Small Icons.
  
• 
  Click on BitLocker Drive Encryption and click on
  Turn BitLocker Off.
  
• 
  Follow on screen instructions. Click on Decrypt the Drive
  when the message appears.

Need to turn off Bitlocker to install Windows 10

We suggest doing the following steps again to resolve the issue. To complete the procedure, make sure that you have the following information:

• You must be able to provide administrative credentials.
• The drive must be BitLocker-protected.

To suspend BitLocker Drive Encryption on an operating system drive, please follow the steps below:

• Click Start, click Control Panel, click
  System and Security, and then click BitLocker Drive Encryption.
• Click Suspend Protection for the operating system drive.
• A message is displayed, informing you that your data will not be protected while BitLocker is suspended and asking if you want to suspend BitLocker Drive Encryption.
  
• Click Yes to continue and suspend BitLocker on the drive.
