  1. Clean install blackscreen after login within a few minutes, no cursor

Hi, I just had some problems with my HDD and wanted to clean install my PC anyways. So i switched off my PC, plugged out the (maybe) broken HDD, rebootet and installed Windows as usual.

But the first thing I noticed was a big green stripe on my left hand side of the screen. Anyways, I was able to create an account and then I was on the desktop. While downloading the graphics drivers the screen turned black. No cursor, nothing. I restarted the PC but at this point you just dont get in anymore. I tried to reinstall Windows many times succesfully, but the Blackscreen shows everytime.

    Any answers to this?

    Greetings.

  2. Clean Install Workaround for Vista

You may remember this news story on techPowerUp! a couple of days ago relating to the lack of clean installs when using the Upgrade Editions of Vista, which required an old OS to be installed. However, Paul Thurrott has managed to find a workaround for this issue, which ironically lets users do a clean install Vista without any previous version of Windows, albeit a little tedious. Here are the steps:
    • Boot from the Windows Vista Upgrade DVD as normal
    • When prompted for a product code, leave this blank
    • Select the version of Vista you have purchased and let Vista install
    • When you boot to your desktop for the first time, run the Vista setup from Windows
    • This time enter your product key
    • When asked whether you want to do an Upgrade of Custom install, select custom and choose a clean install
    • Windows will now install for a second time and you should be able to activate it
Remember, these steps are only advised for use in order to achieve a clean install of Vista, it is only legal to use the upgrade editions if you have previously purchased the appropriate version of Windows.

  3. Window 10 Update blackscreen no cursor

I update to Windows 10 this week and have yet to my computer function. At first I had a cursor and it showed my weather app against a blackscreen. I started following a fix going through the task manager and type"regedit" into the Creative to task bar,
clicking yes, it came up with the Registry Editor and then shortly after it switched to a full blackscreen of death. My computer is quietly humming, my black screen is lit, and I now have no cursor. How can I fix this? I have a Dell Inspiron 15 laptop.

Clean install blackscreen after login within a few minutes, no cursor

various problems upon startup, or restarting, or reawakening from sleep (e.g. no password login prompt, or blackscreen with cursor)

    Dear Arjay/Microsoft,

I am coming back to you with the outcome as requested/promised.

24/8/2017: I restart with powerbutton 3 times (as you suggested), then select "Advanced Options/Troubleshoot/Reset this PC/Keep my files". I leave this to run its course. Regrettably, I didn’t have a second computer handy to refer to your
detailed instructions, so chose this as it looked like the option which gives a completely “clean” reinstallation.

25/8/2017 – Thereafter the first startup didn't give a password prompt, so I had to hold down the powerbutton to switch off. Then I manage to login ok on the next startup.

26/8/2017 - The startup gives only greyscreen & cursor (I waited for over an hour), so then I held down the powerbutton to restart. Then it says upon startup "scanning and repairing drive: system partition".

Then I got 3 times greyscreen & cursor, or blackscreen & cursor, with no password prompt available, having to use each time the powerbutton to restart.

So then I restarted with the powerbutton 3 times in order to again select "Advanced Options/Troubleshoot/Reset this PC/Keep my files".

I now get the sea/cave picture but no password prompt (I waited for over an hour), so am forced to hold down the powerbutton again to restart.

This time I press escape as soon as I see the sea/cave picture, and get the password prompt so I can login ok, check again your suggested instructions and backup some of my files.

Then I restarted with powerbutton 3 times (as you suggested). However, this time I select "Advanced Options/Troubleshoot/Advanced Options/Startup Repair" (as you suggested). It then restarts and says “Checking disk for errors. This might
    take over an hour.”

Once this “Startup Repair” was completed, the computer started up fine and I could login ok.

27/8/2017 - The startup gives a blackscreen & cursor but also showing the time and with some text talking about a boat in the background image (which I couldn’t see because the background image was all black). Then the cursor freezes. I waited about 5 minutes
then held down the powerbutton to restart.

On the second startup, I get the sea/cave picture and can login ok.

When waking up from sleep, I get the sea/cave picture and can login ok, but there is some text talking about a boat on the background image from Bulgaria (which doesn’t correspond to the sea/cave picture).

When waking up from sleep again, there is no password prompt so I hold down the powerbutton to shutdown.

28/8/2017 – At least 2 lots of “Working on updates” during startup, then I managed to login ok. I installed some applications (eg. Avast, Ghostscript, Adobe Reader, etc) in order to start using the computer as normal again. I also install OCCT to be able
to check processor activity. Then I experience several crashes while working, or waking from sleep, requiring to hold down powerbutton to restart/shutdown.

29/8/2017 – Startup shows the sea/cave pic and I can login ok. I now try “Safe Mode (with networking)” to see if the problems persist. The login goes ok (except a window which says “This app can’t open – Tips can’t be opened using the Built-in Administrator
account. Sign in with a different account and try again”). Then I try to switch off airplane mode using the icon at the bottom right of the screen, but this doesn’t function. I find the “Airplane Mode” window under Settings but here also I cannot switch off
airplane. I try to access “Update and Security” again under Settings, but this just closes the Settings window. So I choose Restart and repeat the process to enter “Safe Mode (with networking)”. Login into SafeMode is ok, and again I cannot switch off airplane.

30/8/2017 – Startup shows the sea/cave pic and I can login ok.

31/8/2017 – I get the sea/cave picture and can login ok, but there is some text talking about a boat on the background image from Bulgaria (which doesn’t correspond to the sea/cave picture shown). Waking up from a sleeping screen, the start menu locks up.
I leave for an hour it to see if it will come back itself, but it goes to blackscreen with cursor, then about 5-10 mins after I wake up the screen it shows the sea/cave picture (along with text about the boat from Bulgaria) but the computer is now frozen.
I leave the computer for another 10-15mins and then upon wakeup from screensleep I can now enter the password, but it then goes to blackscreen with cursor. After another 5-10mins, it wakes up from screensleep and I get the sea/cave picture and can login ok,
but again there is some text talking about a boat on the background image from Bulgaria (which doesn’t correspond to the sea/cave picture shown).

Q4) What would you suggest that I do now? Should I try “Startup repair” yet again? Should I now make use of the Creators Update ISO file that I burnt to DVD in order to make a clean install (and will this delete my files)? Should I try to
reinstall or update the drivers related to the AMD graphics card?

For my own sake, and for others in the community:

Q5) Please could you explain the difference between the following?:

    - "Advanced Options/Troubleshoot/Reset this PC/Keep my files"

    - "Advanced Options/Troubleshoot/Reset this PC/Delete all files"

    - "Advanced Options/Troubleshoot/ Advanced Options/Startup Repair"

    - "Advanced Options/Troubleshoot/ Advanced Options/System Image Recovery”

    - "Use a device/EFI DVD”

    - "Use a device/EFI CD-ROM”

    - "Use a device/EFI USB Device”

Q6) Are there other system reinstall options apart from these listed above in Q5?

Q7) Which of the above gives the “cleanest” reinstallation (and why)? If it is “System Image Recovery”, then what is the next best, and what is the difference?

Q8) What can we understand about the startup (if anything) from the fact that the sea/cave picture is presented upon restart, rather than one of the changing assortment of background images that asks the user to say whether they like the
    image?

    Thanks again.
