Windows 10: Windows keeps waking up my sleeping HDD / spinning back up spun down HDD.

Windows really likes to keep the drives active for unknown reason.

I have tried the followings:

1. Changed "Power Options" in Control Panel;
2. Modified registry to add AHCI Link Power Management in "Power Options" and changed the settings accordingly;
3. Disabled "Storage Service" in Services;

and all these do not work.

The HDD is Seagate Barracuda and BitLocked. I use SeaChest (CMD tool provided by Seagate) to manually sleep or spin down:

• The spinDown command actually spins down the disk, but Windows constantly spins it up again. Oddly the disk spins down again itself, as if it's fighting against Windows, but Windows spins it up again. This happens several times until the disk gives up and starts spinning continuously.
• The sleep command actually puts the disk into sleep mode, but Windows wakes it up after several minutes. (In the SegChest CMD, it says the sleep mode will put the disk into absolute sleep mode so won't be able to use it unless the system restarts. Regardless, Windows somehow wakes it up after several minutes.)
• If you disable write-caching of the disk in Device Manager, spinDown and sleep become ineffective instantly after the commands are given. It attempts to spin down/sleep, but unlike before, it spins up/wakes up immediately back.

HDD won't spin down/sleep in Windows 10

I have recently upgraded from Win 8.1 Pro x64 to Win 10 Pro x64 and I am experiencing a weird problem.

My HDD setup is as follows:

Samsung EVO 250GB M2 SSD - OS and apps

Crucial MX100 512GB SATA SSD - Games

Seagate ST2000 2TB SATA HDD - Media

After configuring Windows 10 to sleep the media HDD (the seagate) after 5 mins of inactivity I noticed that it never actually does it, the HDD never goes to sleep, spins down.

That HDD only has media on it and no apps so there should be nothing accessing it.

How can I found out what is preventing the HDD from going to sleep?

 

Windows 10 refuses to put hdd in sleep mode

Hi,

i have already asked this a few month ago, but didnt receive a helpful answer, so i try again.

I have nvme ssd as boot drive and a seagate 2tb hdd as storage drive.

The problem is that windows does not put the seagate drive in sleep mode, even if it is inactive for a long time. I set the spindown time in the power settings to 5 minutes, i checked if processes were accessing the drive (which was not the case by the way)
and i even removed the drive letter to make the drive inaccessable for programs. None of this did work.

I also contacted the microsoft live support, but they only suggested to set a spindown time in the power settings.

I did search for a solution for hours, but i didnt find a suitable solution. Some threads suggested programs like revosleep to force the hdd in sleep mode and this kind of worked, but windows wakes up the hdd as soon as it spun down.

Not even a clean Windows 10 installation solved the issue.

Well how can I make a screenshot about the HDD spinning up?

My ears hear it because it is a loud drive (specifically got a 7200rpm for VMs and Steam).

Today was the icing on the cake.

All software that has data on D: (Steam and Hyper-V) were turned off.

Disk0 - SSD (C:, 120GB, Windows system drive)

Disk1 - HDD (D:, 1TB 7200rpm, data drive)

Disk2 - HDD (E:, 500GB 5400rpm, data drive)

I right-clicked on C -> properties in Windows Explorer.

Drive D spun up. Can anyone explain that?

I don't know about Disk2, its a WD Green and so quiet I can't hear it when spinning/starting up.
