  2. how do I export certificates and/or private keys?

    Hi,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community. Let me assist you.

I suggest you to follow the below steps to export a certificate with a private key

    1. Open the Certificates console for the user, computer, or service you want to manage.

    2. In the console pane, select the certificate store and container holding the certificate that you want to export.

    3. In the details pane, click the certificate you want to export.

    4. On the Action menu, point to
All Tasks, and then click Export.

    5. In the Certificate Export Wizard, click
Yes, export the private key. (This option will appear only if the private key is marked as exportable and you have access to the private key.)

    6. Under Export File Format, do one or all of the following, and then click
    Next.

    • To include all certificates in the certification path, select the

    • To delete the private key if the export is successful, select the
Delete the private key if the export is successful
      check box.
7.In Password, type a password to encrypt the private key you are exporting. In
Confirm password, type the same password again, and then click
    Next
    .

    8. In File name, type a file name and path for the PKCS #12 file that will store the exported certificate and private key, click

  3. Export Certificate Wizard pop-up in taskbar...?

I saw a notification in my taskbar that files were being encrypted and I should run the Certificate Export Wizard to back up my certificate. I assumed it was a normal thing so I ran the wizard and it stored the export file in my OneDrive folder by default.
It didn't occur to me until after the process was complete that this might be some kind of scam, since I didn't not initiate any kind of encryption process. I don't recall ever seeing this pop up before. And right after, I got a notification in the taskbar
from MS asking if I wanted to send automatic feedback about my computer usage - I assumed this was normal because I'm running Visual Studio and SQL Server, and they always seem to pester me about that kind of stuff.

Any opinions as to whether this is something I should worry about? I'm running Win10.

Thanks to anyone who might have some insight.

Should I use the Certificate Export Wizard?

How to run Windows 10 Certificate Export Wizard for local user certificate when the cert does not exist yet?

All the instructions on how to export a local Windows 10 user certificate says to go to the Certificate Manager for the local users and go to:

Certificates - Current User => Personal => Certificates

    certmgr screenshot

to find your cert and then you can export it. But, I don't have any certs in this location. I used the find function to search all cert stores for my currently logged-in username and came up with nothing. So, I need some alternative instructions on how to run the Certificate Export Wizard.

Edit: I didn't previously install a cert. I'm assuming that one is created for all Windows accounts and I simply want to back it up so I can access my encrypted files in case of a disaster.
