  1. Search Indexing and Windows file explorer not responding

    Hi,

so my problem started a week ago when I updated my computer, and had just downloaded some new software, not sure which one the problem may stem from since it was at the same time, but I do trust the software company, it's tied with my University.

Problem is this: when I click on some files in file explorer, the while thing doesn't respond, I get the loading sign on my cursor and then nothing. I can't unclick whatever I tried to, and this problem happens with both right-clicking and left clicking. So I went to try find my settings to view my errors; I found my second problem, windows search indexing was turned off and would not turn back on. When I go into control panel manually and try to edit my "Searching Windows" setting, the page won't load at all and the settings freezes now too. These two errors combined means I can't try most of the solutions available on here, though I have done all the basic's I can think off including shutting down and starting again, using task manager to restart file explorer and using the command line to try navigating into my settings.

The software I had downloaded works perfectly, though I can't access any of the saved files from it due to the file explorer issue. I did have to update to most recent Java version to run it, but that's the only other thing I had to download. Is there something I can do to stop this file explorer issue and turn my search indexing back on?

    Thanks,

    Ciara.

    :)

  2. Index search in File Explorer

    Hello,

I suggest you to try the below step to see if it resolves the issue.

If the index can't find a file that you know exists in an indexed location, you might need to rebuild the index. Rebuilding the index can take several hours, and searches might be incomplete until the index is fully rebuilt.

    1. Open Indexing Options by clicking the
    Start button
and then clicking Control Panel. In the
    search box
, type indexing options, and then click
    Indexing Options
    .

    2. Click Advanced. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

    3. In the Advanced Options dialog box, click the
    Index Settings tab
, and then click Rebuild. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

    Index search in File Explorer

    Hello,

on my keyboard there is a search button (magnifying glass).

In Windows 7 this key opened up Windows Explorer and in the righthand upper corner I could enter my search and the complete index was searched.

Now it opens up some flyout.

    The problems is that :

    - with a lot of hits, you don't get a good overview of all the results

    - in windows 7 all hits were organised in columns with lots of info and the possibility to order the results.

I want to do a search in Windows 10/ File explorer, like I did in Windows 7.

But how to search the index in Windows 10/ File explorer?

If I search this pc everything is searched, indexed and not indexed content, even my external drive is searched. And it is slow 'working on it' is the message I get.

I can search only my harddrive but the problem is the same: indexed and not indexed content is searched. Slow. 'working on it'

    The index says: "indexing complete".

    thanks.

    Search Content of MHT files

    Hi David,

Most probably, this is a problem with the search and indexing of your Windows 10 computer. For us to provide the best resolution possible, we would like to clarify the following:

    • Are you trying to search the content of MHT files using Cortana?
    • Have you tried searching it using the File Explorer?
    • Are you using a third-party app to search for the content of MHT files?

As an initial troubleshooting step, we suggest that you run the troubleshooter for search and indexing. To run the Search and Indexing troubleshooter, follow these steps:

    • Click the Start button and select the Settings
      icon.
    • Choose Update & Security from the list.
    • Click Troubleshoot in the left pane of the window.
    • Under Find and fix other problems.
    • Select Search and Indexing and click Run the troubleshooter.

We'll keep an eye out for your response.
