Can't update to Windows 1909 from 1803. Tried many troubleshooting steps already.

    Hello,

I have attempted to update to windows 1909 around 15 times by now. each time trying a different troubleshooting technique. I am currently on windows 1803, OS build 17134.1246, 64 bit operating system.

My most recent error was - 0xC1900101 - 0x30018 failed in the FIRST_BOOT phase with an error during SYSPREP_SPECIALIZE operation. I got this error when trying to install the update via the media creation wizard since updates through the setting app had not been working.

However, the setting app gives this as the most recent error when checking my update history - Last failed install attempt on ‎9/‎21/‎2020 - 0x80240034.

I have tried every applicable step on the guide for that error:

    1. Make sure that your device has enough space. My C: drive has 280GB
    2. Run Windows Update a few times. I have run the update many times. It seems to always fail at 60% installation completed
    3. Check third-party drivers and download any updates. I don't have any problems with third party drivers, but if there is a way to check them all I would be interested to know.
    4. Unplug extra hardware. I only have my mouse USB dongle and keyboard plugged in currently. The mouse is usb A, the keyboard uses a USB C port
    5. Check Device Manager for errors. There are no errors in the device manager.
    6. Remove third-party security software. I haven't had any such software running in a long time, but to complete this step I uninstalled and deleted all the Norton security files on my computer.
    7. Repair hard-drive errors. Ran this step, but it had no effect on the update.
    8. Do a clean restart into Windows. Ran this step, but it had no effect on the update.
    9. Restore and repair system files. Ran this step, but it had no effect on the update.

I also attempted some troubleshooting tips found on Youtube

    1. renaming SoftwareDistribution folder to SoftwareDistribution.old

    2. renaming catroot folder to catroot.old

Note that I was unable to rename the catroot folder because access was denied, but I did rename the software distribution folder successfully. It had not effect on the update failure.

Also in my update history there is a driver update called "Intel - Net - 12.18.9.11 24" with the error "Last failed install attempt on ‎9/‎21/‎2020 - 0x80240034"

Would it be possible to try updating directly to windows 1903 as an alternative?

    :)

The tutorials provided are just a list of troubleshooting steps. Use only the steps which apply to you.

Since none of the troubleshooting steps here worked, I'd suggest you do a Clean install.

User.000 issue after updating to 1909

I'm one of the many people suffering from issues with user profiles after applying Update 1909 to Windows 10. I've read all the threads I can find on the topic here and have followed the suggestions, all to no avail. Any other thoughts are appreciated.

After applying Update 1909, the ProfileImagePath was changed to c:\users\User.000
One file that was always in use and couldn't be removed was left in c:\users\User (can't recall or find the exact file now), so I could never rename or remove the c:\user\User directory.

I followed the multiple suggestions from Brink and others:
    • Rebooted at least 6 times
    • Enabled hidden Administrator
    • Booted into Safe Mode
    • Changed ProfileImagePath
    • Tried to rename c:\users\User but couldn't because a file was still in use
    • Copied all data from c:\users\User.000 into c:\users\User
    • Rebooted and had temporary profile
    • Followed steps in Brink tutorial to change ImageProfilePath; rebooted with no change
    • Restored using Restore Point from before Update 1909 - returned to single profile state (User.000)
    • Removed each update that was installed individually and rebooted after each update removal - profile state never changed
    • After all updates were removed, repeated the steps above with hidden Administrator, changing profile, etc. - same issue with file in use in c:\users\User
    • Followed all steps above with hidden Administrator but without copying files from User.000 to User - same results

    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!
