  1. How Does a Copy Buffer Work?

I know this sounds like a very basic question and it is. I don't know much about computer. What does a copy buffer specifically do - the actual steps? I'm asking this question because I want to know how big I should make the buffer size in the FastCopy program. I don't understand people's explanation how to go about it. It's too technical.

Let me being with my current understanding. (Don't worry if I get the small details wrong. I just want a general idea.) When you need to copy data from point A to point B, the CPU is told instructions to move the reading mechanism to the designated data area at point A. After it reads what the data says, the writing mechanism immediately writes the data in the RAM. It keeps doing this until amount of data in the RAM is equal to the buffer size. Then, at this point, I am guessing that the data is checked and if there is an error, it has to start all over from the beginning point of the buffer. It also seems from my reading that errors happen infrequently.

If you have a small buffer size, there is a lot more movement of parts of the drive I guess which will increase the time significantly? The reading and writing mechanism of the drive has to be moving around a lot more. For example, with a small buffer size, data has to be verified bit by bit so the reading mechanism has to be moving from the RAM to the drive. Overall, a smaller buffer size makes copying much longer.

Then, why don't people just create a large buffer size? It doesn't seem like many errors occur in reading and writing the data. Wouldn't increasing the copy buffer to something like 1 gig usually make everything much faster?

    :)

The tutorials provided are just a list of troubleshooting steps. Use only the steps which apply to you.

Since none of the troubleshooting steps here worked, I'd suggest you do a Clean install.

Buffering on Windows 10 is giving me a headache. Please help

    Hello David,

There are multiple reasons why your Movies and TV app buffers. I would like to know more information to isolate the concern:

    • When did it start?
    • What changes have you made prior to the issue.
    • Is this happening to other streaming apps, like YouTube, Netflix, etc.?

In the meantime, I suggest that you perform the troubleshooting steps in this
    article
    to isolate the issue.

We will wait for your response.

    Regards.

    Buffer memory?

Hey, I have been researching a little more about hard drives lately, and I noticed there is a specification line that lists the amount of buffer memory. Can someone tell me more about what this means and what its use is and is the different between 8 and 16MB buffer memory substantial?
