    Disabling SSD Scheduled optimization Defragmentation

I've read that one of the hints to increase the SSD's lifespan and to prevent losing data is through:

Optimize Drives / Scheduled optimization / Off Disable.

Is that true? Can disabling the scheduled optimization frequency e.g. weekly prevent early damage of SSD?

What about the opposite? Can Disabling this function be more harmful than beneficial?

    Please advise me.

    :)

  2. Is the same SSD optimization than SSD defragmentation?

@DaveM121 Thanks, so according to your reply, do you have disabled automatic ssd optimization? It comes by default with windows 10 once each week.

As you can check although it's in spanish it says schedeuled optimization -> Weekly

According to article it's not the same

    A) Defragmentation "Yes, your SSD's file system sometimes needs a kind of defragmentation and that's handled by Windows, monthly by default, when appropriate" that is performed by windows montly

    B) SSDs also have the concept of TRIM is a separate concept from fragmentation,
it is still handled by the Windows Storage Optimizer subsystem and the schedule is managed by the same UI from the User's perspective (I guess here when you optimize manually your ssd or automatically as it's default configured you are running TRIM on SSD
which means that it's a way for SSDs to mark data blocks as being not in use)

So I won't disable defragmentation because according to the link I posted: " If you disable defragmentation completely, you are taking a risk
that your filesystem metadata could reach maximum fragmentation and get you potentially in trouble."

I don't see any problem also in mark data blocks not used with automated or manually ssd optimization.

    So I think I won't disable anything.

Thanks for your support, time and patience!!! I appreciate it!!

  3. Disable Defragmentation for SSD

    Hi Stanislav,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I understand that you are willing to disable defragmentation on Windows 10. I will certainly help you.

Defragmentation is the process of consolidating fragmented data on a volume (such as a hard disk or a storage device). It rearranges fragmented data so your disks and drives can work more efficiently.

Follow the below steps to disable Defragmentation for Solid State Drives:

    1. Launch the File Explorer (press Windows logo + E keys) right-click on the Solid State Drive disk, select

Properties and press the Tools tab.

    2. Under Optimize and defragment drive, click on the
    Optimize button.

    3. The Optimize Drives box will open. Click on the Change settings
    box.

    4. Uncheck the Run on a schedule check-box and Click OK. This will disable Defragmentation.

Hope this helps. If the issue remains unresolved, please get back to us and we would be happy to help.

  4. Disabling SSD Scheduled optimization Defragmentation

    Hard Drive Optimization/Defragmentation

At this stage, it is virtually pointless to defragment a hard drive. Most are entirely fast enough that defragmentation won't produce any noticeable performance improvement. Moreover, many current hard drives are SSDs and it is detrimental to defragment
SSDs. Finally, Windows 10 already runs defragmentation automatically on a schedule. You must disable that scheduled task in order to prevent periodic (once each week) defragmentation.
