  1. A few Noobish questions about Upgrading from 8.1 to Windows 10

**Preamble, you can skip this if you like**

So I never upgraded when everyone else did. For whatever reason, my corner of the internet was preaching that win10 was the devil, it'll steal your information, it'll update itself whenever it wants and kill whatever you were doing, it offers very little tangible performance upgrade over 8.1 and it may possibly kill your beloved family pets etc etc. Was warned off by the tech/pc building side of the internet at the time, every article or YouTube video was about a massive problem or vulnerability in 10 and I just felt safer where I was since it was working fine.

Obviously over time that perception has changed, seemingly some big updates fixed a lot of what was wrong and people have just learned to live with the other parts they don't like. I still didn't really upgrade because I was hoping that I could eek by on 8.1 until it was time for a new PC and not need to go through the hassle of upgrading since it's pretty stressful to me.

But now it seems like most newer games and apps strongly recommend 10, a lot of them not even supporting any legacy OS and the ones that do only support 7, not 8.1. Since I have done some upgrades to my PC, I think I'm going to still be using it for the foreseeable future, probably 18 months at least, and to get the best use out of my system, it seems that 8.1 really won't cut it anymore.

    **End of preamble**

I have a few questions about the upgrade process using the media creation tool and any precautions I should take.

Do I need to link my Microsoft account to Windows 8.1 before upgrading to make the windows license carry over? Is that recommended? I never bothered to sign in with it but remember seeing the option, I know it's mandatory for Win10. I can't remember where my actual key is since it's a prebuilt system.

I don't really have any files I'm worried about losing, I like running windows pretty light, it's mostly games, game launchers, Discord and Spotify. I'm fine reinstalling stuff. If I select 'Keep nothing' at the upgrade screen, does that wipe all drives clean and reset them to full capacity? Also does it wipe things like video card drivers and motherboard drivers?

If I select 'Keep files' and not apps, similar question, does that wipe most of the drives to full capacity and just leave me with the few pictures I have saved? Same question about drivers.

I use Avast Antivirus, could that cause any weirdness during the update? Also I've heard windows defender in Windows 10 + some common sense is a perfectly good defence against malware so I might not bother reinstalling it afterwards. I don't really do anything that'd leave me vulnerable to viruses.

Roughly how long should the upgrade take? (I'll leave full specs at the bottom in case that helps give some performance reference)

What should be the first things I'd do after the upgrade is complete, any settings to change or egregious things that should be disabled etc?

And just generally is there anything else I'm missing for forgetting?

    **PC Specs**

    Intel i7 4790 (non K)

16GB (2x8GB) of Corsair DDR3 RAM at 1600mhz (it did have 2x4GB but I upgraded it to 16GB, gave the old RAM to my brother, Ideally I'd have kept the old RAM in there too since they were the same brand and same timings but it would've meant moving the CPU cooler to fit)

Asus H-81 Gamer Motherboard (a weaker point of the system)

    GTX 970 4GB (well 3.5GB but labeled as 4GB)

C: Drive, 250GB Samsung 850 EVO Sata SSD

    D: Drive, 1TB Seagate 7200RPM Barracuda

    E: Drive, 2TB Seagate 7200RPM Barracuda

    550w Corsair 80+ Power Supply

And of course, Windows 8.1 Home 64x.

Typical internet speed is about 150Mbs download and 20Mbs Upload.

Any help is very much appreciated, I'm ok with the hardware side of things but am usually pretty clueless when it comes to the software side and it stresses me out the very few times there have been issues since it's not a physical part I can look at and understand.

Windows 10 upgrade problem, no input accepted

I really hate having to come here and ask for help, but I really am stumped. It hurts my geek pride. I have a PC with fairly modern hardware in it. It has a p8p67 pro in it. I have tried upgrading windows 10 on it twice now. Both times I have had the same result.

After windows finishes upgrading it goes to the log in/set up screen. I can't do anything. No keyboard or mouse input is accepted.

I will list some, or hopefully all, of the troubleshooting steps I have tried:
    • Move keyboard and mouse to different USB ports.
    • Try different keyboard or mouse.
    • Restart computer, repeatedly.
    • Google for related issues.
    • Update Bios, because why not.
    • Create boot media and revert to windows 7.
The windows 10 system restore boot media works fine with keyboard and mouse. All USB ports work in windows 7. I don't know what is wrong. I suspect that windows 10 is lacking a driver of some sort, but since the computer accepts no input I have no way of checking for which driver let alone installing it.

Please help me figure this out. If I have to revert back to windows 7 again, I am not going to get it upgraded to windows 10. Thank you in advanced.
