Installing an old game - cannot drag file into x86 Program Files installation folder

    Hello,

I am trying to install an old game which requires that I drag a compatibility file into its own installation folder within x86 Program Files. However, I can only drag a shortcut into this folder. I am an administrator on the computer, and the only account on the computer. I have disabled UAC, tried to give my own account, the admin user group, as well as "everyone" the "full control" privileges, and it still does not change it. I am on Windows 10. Might I add that I have been through about a half dozen old threads with steps to navigate the painful non user friendly security options menus and none of that works either. I just want to drag a file and be done. Why, Microsoft, is this SO HARD?

    Frustrated,

    Nathan

    :)

Partitioning Program Files/Program Files(x86) from Windows 10 install?

In the coming week I will be installing Windows 10 Home on my new computer. I will be using an SSD and an HDD, the SSD for the OS, programs and games and the HDD for photos, music and all the other slow stuff.
So, my question. In case the OS were to ever get corrupted, or I had to reinstall the OS for any other reason, is it possible to have the SSD set up as follows; Partition 1 - OS, Partition 2 - Program Files/Program Files((x86) plus other associated folders/files) and Partition 3 for my games, so that any re-install does not wipe out my already installed programs?

I had no problem doing this in with my XP desktop(OS in C and Progs in D, although not perfect, but was never able to do it with Windows 7.

    Can it be done?

    Tom.

Windows 10 - installing to Program Files folder instead of Program Files (x86)

    Hi Ftax

You cannot manually choose between Program Files and Program Files (x86)

The program Files (x86) folder is for 32bit applications and the Program Files folder is for 64bit applications

if you want an application to install into the Program Files folder, you must download the 64bit version of that application and vice versa for the (x86) folder . . .

Installing an old game - cannot drag file into x86 Program Files installation folder

Cannot install Call of Duty patches

There are a lot of problems with games not updating, or even running when installed into Program Files(x86) because they don't recognise ( and ) as valid characters in path names.

I suggest you copy out your player profile, uninstall and reinstall to a folder other than Program Files(x86) (I always have a seperate Games folder where all my games are installed to) and try again.

As I said, it's highly likely the install program on the update doesn't recognize ( and ) as valid characters for path names, which will be why it "can't" find the folder.

A bit of 64-bit knowledge for you *Smile Installing an old game - cannot drag file into x86 Program Files installation folder :)
