System Reserved partition on wrong drive - how do I move it?

System Reserved partition on wrong drive - how do I move it? y7ckQOm-2imf-Eh3uVH6AClZmqj2D82awgDSsWCYilo.jpg

Now, the problem is (apart from me being an idiot!) is that when I installed Win 10 onto Disk 0 (my SSD disk), I didn't disconnect the other drive from the machine. Therefore the System Reserved partition is on Disk 1, while the OS is on the SSD.

How can I re-partition Disk 0 System Reserved partition onto the front?

I have an external USB drive I can use to image the partitions on to, however I'm concerned that backing up / re-partitioning / restoring the partitions wil render the machine unbootable.

I'm looking for a step-by-step guide on the best way to do this without having to do a full OS re-install.

Recovery Partition vs System Reserved Partition

Thanks for all the info guys.

Both original & target SSD's are listed as MBR as opposed to UEFI. I may have created a partition unknowingly in getting the original/new unformatted drive recognized, but I don't recall taking any steps that Windows did not step me through.

Not that an upgrade to WIN 10 Pro is contemplated, but I suspect that having no System Reserved partition will not allow that to happen, after seeing how the original WIN 10 upgrade created a problem for some WIN 7 users that had a smaller 100mb vs 500mb System Reserved partition.

Extending system reserved partition gone wrong

Hi and thanks for reaching out. My name is William. I'm a Windows technical expert. I'll be happy to help you out today.

Create a Windows 10 boot media using this MS guide:
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-downlo...

Afterwards, boot from the USB media. At the Windows install setup select the Repair option > System Recovery Options > Command prompt. From here you can use Diskpart to try to recover the system reserved partition. I believe the appropriate commands would be:

    diskpart

list partition and note the drive letter for your system disk (it may not be CSystem Reserved partition on wrong drive - how do I move it? :)

Select x where x is the Windows system drive

active to make the drive active.

Or refer to this iink for more for additional steps:

Alternatively, you can use the same tool you used to bork the system reserved partition (if you have the proversion):

System Reserved partition on wrong drive - how do I move it?

"Windows 10 couldn't be installed - we could update the system reserved partition"

I think you mean "could not update", not "could".

    Suggestions:

    • Disconnect any other hard drives.
    • Run chkdsk /f on the System Reserved partition. You'll have to do this from the CMD prompt in Repair Mode.
    • Initially there were reports of some System Reserved partitions being too small for the upgrade. Search for details if the first two suggestions fail.
