Windows 10: Windows defender unexpected error freeze

I ran a full scan over night and when I got back to my computer in the morning there is a red cross on the defender icon and it says to restart it, I have pressed restart and it just keeps buffering before it says unexpected error. I have also tried running a quick scan but it brings up the defender menu with a pop up saying the it administrator does not have permission to complete that action or something along those lines.

I have also restarted the computer itself. And it still does not want to work.

EDIT: I have done a clean boot and now it's showing me that threats have been detected, the restart button has now changed to start actions. Upon clicking it the threat list disappears and nothing happens. When I open the app again the button is back. Cross is still visible on the icon.

The 0x8050800c error is actually a Windows Defender client error code rather than a Windows Update code:

However, I believe that the actual cause of this error is usually a removal of Defender’s operational data by a third-party registry or system cleaner. I personally witnessed a case of this with Ccleaner and reported it in this thread:

So I’m not sure that the resolution here will actually eliminate the problem.

 

Windows defender - Unexpected error

Hi,

I don't seem to be able to get my Windows Defender to run, keep getting the unexpected error message.

I checked the registry and the group policy, everything is set as it should be. I ran FixWin10 and tried fixing windows defender through that.

The problem started when I had a virus and I installed Emsisoft anti-virus to get rid of it, which it did.

I uninstalled Emsisoft AV now and can't get Windows Defender to run.

Is there a way of re-installing Windows Defender? Any ideas?
