Windows 10: Snip & Sketch no longer comes back to the foreground after taking a snip with UWP apps running

I'm not sure which build/update this started happening with currently on 2004, Build 19041.508 but for a while now, Snip & Sketch has stopped returning to the foreground after I take a snip when UWP apps are open. The only two exceptions I've come across so far are Messenger and WhatsApp, both Facebook creations. This also means I have the potential to lose the snip unless I alt-tab back to Snip & Sketch in these situations. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, resetting the app, and some PowerShell commands I ran across for the Microsoft Store that I can't find right now. Nothing has fixed it.


If I have no UWP apps open or just Facebook and/or WhatsApp, it works correctly with absolutely no issues. As soon as I open another UWP app, it goes back to not returning to the foreground after a snip. Any ideas on how to resolve this?


UWP apps tested that have caused this issue: Clock, Calendar, Calculator, Settings, Groove Music, Microsoft Store, Your Phone, Hulu, Netflix, Twitter, Speedtest, Plex

App location for Snip & Sketch

The Windows 10 Snip & Sketch App is a Microsoft Store (UWP) App, so it does not have a traditional ".exe" file or location that can be accessed to create a hotkey.

If you want to create a Hotkey to a UWP App (eg. Snip & Sketch), the easiest way is:

1. Type Shell:Appsfolder in file explorer's address bar or from the Run dialogue (Win+R)
   

This will open the "virtual" start menu apps folder for us to work with.

1. Locate the App (eg. Snip & Sketch), right click and select "Create shortcut." Allow the shortcut to be placed on Desktop.
   
2. Right click on shortcut, enter properties and customize shortcut key.
   

 

Snip and Sketch Awkward

Use Windows+shift+s to launch Snip and Sketch. Can snip a screenshot.

Now the problem is this: after snipping the screen shot, it does not automatically appear in the Snip and Sketch app. So I open Snip and Sketch and there's nothing on it.

So I have choose 'new' and snip the screen yet again.

I recall using this once and taking a screenshot and voila! Snip and Sketch appeared with the screen shot duly in the app's workspace, ready for annotations and saving etc. This facility has disappeared. I have re-set it according to instructions, and even
reinstalled it - yet the problem persists.

Snip & Sketch

It's the Snipping Tool that's being phased out, not Snip & Sketch. FWIW, I just used the latter tool and was able to paste the snip into a Word (Office 365) document. There was a point in the past when for reasons unknown, opening Word would clear the
clipboard. If you're using an older version, you might want to try opening the document first, before taking a screenshot.

If you prefer to use Snipping Tool, all you have to do (as I suggested earlier) is open the Start Menu and type snip.
