Windows 10: XBox controller turns off instantly when left on a flat surface

OS: Windows 10 Home, Version 2004, Build 19041.508, Experience: 120.2212.31.0


Controller: XBox 1708 wireless controller. Firmware version: 4.8.1923.0. Driver version: 10.0.19041.1 06/12/2019. Controller is used wired using a micro USB 2.0 cable to the computer.


If I leave the xbox controller on a flat surface, it instantly turns itself off. I mean instantly. Less than 1 second. It is extremely annoying. I would be playing a game, put the controller down on the table to get a drink of water, and it instantly turns off. Some times, it turns itself off if I hold it nice and level in my hands too.


I can leave the controller in my lap tilted up, and it won't turn off. But if I leave it down flat, it will turn itself off after less than a second. As soon as it touches the surface, my game spits out a Controller Disconnected message.


Some times, the xbox logo stays lit, and I can mash the A button until it reconnects. Some times the xbox logo turns off completely and I need to hold it down to reconnect.


Things I've tried:


- Updated controller firmware


- Updated hardware drivers


- Disabled USB selective suspend from my power settings


- Tried a different USB cable


- Tried using the controller with new batteries and with no batteries


Honestly can't find anything online. It's all xbox+xbox controller questions about random disconects which require a firmware update. This is a consistent replicatable problem.


If the accelerometer and gyroscopes detect that the controller is stationary and horizontal, it decides to shut down.

Can’t connect Xbox one controller to pc
