Windows 10: What's going on here? High memory usage beyond total being used according to task manager

My memory usage skyrockets within an hour of turning on my PC. The mem usage per process doesn't add up to my 32GB total memory.

PC eventually freezes, sound stutters, and every thing becomes unresponsive - cannot Alt+F4, Ctrl+Alt+Del doesn't do anything. If I have Task Manager open at that point, it will quit.

Memory test, virus/malware scans all done. Does anyone have any ideas? It's making my machine very unreliable!

Task manager not showing complete memory usage?


Hi, I have 4GB of DDR3 ram on my laptop. When I go into the task manager to check how much ram is being used, it says only 795MB and yet it also says that 94% is being used.

This is always the case, of course with varying numbers. The memory usage shown does not coordinate with the percentage, but the computer performance certainly correlates with the percentage.

When I check in cpu-z, it does confirm that the 4GB are all installed. What is going on here?

Ah, I missed the performance tab which does indeed show all of the correct total amount of ram being used. Now how do I find all of the individual processes and services using those resources?

My laptop is almost brand new.But am not sure if the memory is working ok , its 70% 2.9GB of 4gb is in use I don't know what programs should I end task or not.Even when surfing with google chrome it goes 70-80%Whats happening ?Is it normal? How can I decrease this ?

I spent many more hours than I had hoped this past week reading and trying others' suggestions from this community on how to reduce high RAM usage due to ntoskrnl.exe. The "System and compressed memory" process remained the top consumer of RAM, using 500-900MB,
among all other processes running. I deemed it to be the likely culprit in making my computer use frustratingly sluggish. After completing your
third step, steps 1. & 2. provided no improvement in my case, the "System and compressed memory" process RAM usage has plummeted from the top of the Task Manager Process list to the bottom, running at a remarkable 0.1MB! That's a whole lot less than
1% of the targeted process' gluttony. You're hired! Ps. I'll be keeping an eye on the process' use as I get back to normal operations, and be back if it floats to high in the list. Or if the registry fix you suggested has compromised use in any way. Please
explain in simple terms what the insertion of your registry modification is doing.
