I'm still having issues with scheduled optimization for my SSDs, even after installing the...

A couple weeks ago, I manually downloaded and installed the September 8, 2020—KB4571756 (OS Build 19041.508) update, which allegedly contains the fix for the SSD optimization bug.

The amnesia portion of the issue is gone. Optimize Drives remembers how many days it's been since the last retrim. However, even after re-enabling "Scheduled optimization", and setting it to "Weekly", with increased task priority, my SSDs haven't been retrimmed in 16 days.

Upon checking Event Viewer (filtering the Current Log for "Event Sources: Defrag"), I noticed that all three of my SSD drives were retrimmed on the day I installed the update, because I manually ran a retrim (09/13).

Still, all drives were retrimmed a second time on the same day and defragged at the exact same time. Since then, no more retrims or defrags (which, as I understand, should be a weekly and monthly occurrence, respectively).

Also, I have two other... things that are listed by Windows as "solid state drives". Both start with "\\?\Volume" and can't be retrimmed ("Optimization not available" under Optimize Drives and failed task under Event Viewer). However, one of them has been defragged almost weekly since the update: on 09/13 and again on 09/21. What could that be?

    Disabling SSD Scheduled optimization (Defragmentation)

I've read that one of the hints to increase the SSD's lifespan and to prevent losing data is through:

Optimize Drives / Scheduled optimization / Off (Disable).

Is that true? Can disabling the scheduled optimization frequency (e.g. weekly) prevent early damage of SSD?

What about the opposite? Can Disabling this function be more harmful than beneficial?

    Please advise me.

Windows 10 can not optimize HDD, says it is a SSD Help

    Hi Steve,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Community.

Appreciate your efforts to work on this issue.

    • Does the BIOS recognizes the disk as HDD or SSD?

Suggest you to set the Optimize Drives Service to start automatically from the services window to check if that helps.

    1. Open the run window, type ‘services.msc’ and press Enter.
    2. Search for Optimize Drives Service and select the start-up type as automatic. Also ensure to start the service.

If you have set SATA controller to AHCI mode for Solid State Drive, in Device Manager it would show as SATA hard disk.

    Follow these steps:

    1. Click start, type “Defragment” and click “Defragment and Optimize your drives”.
    2. On the “Defragment and Optimize your drives” window. Make sure that your SSD is categorized as an SSD.
    3. If it’s not, then you can set it as a SSD on your bios. This way, you don’t have to exclude your SSD or disable any scheduled defragmentation.
Disclaimer: Modifying BIOS/ complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the configuring
of BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Modifications of the settings are at your own risk.

    Hope this helps.

Let us know if you got the help you needed.
