  1. Storage Spaces Confusion

I have this storage spaces pool consisting of three identical 8TB Seagate hdds.

Here is the pool in file manager circled in blue. Beside it is another hdd that's not part of the pool and it's circled in red.

I want to keep the 24TB pool but I need to remove the 4TB hdd. But when I do remove the 4TB hdd, my 24TB pool stops working and I get this error in the storage spaces manager.

I did not change USB ports on any drive, I simply removed the 4TB drive. I tried it while the computer was running and while the computer was shutoff. I even disabled the 4TB hdd before removing it and I keep getting the same error.

My pool is intact but unless I have the 4TB drive connected, the pool will not work despite the 4tb hdd not being part of the pool.

  2. Storage Spaces is confusing! Help?

I have an old 5-drive storage box that I have been using for years. It is a JBOD. It has a SiliconImage SIL4726 Raid controller chip. The box is connected via eSATA.

I recently upgraded to Win 10 and immediately, I could only see ONE of the 5 drives [Drive 0].

I've been reading and found that MS had invented Storage Spaces, primarily to confuse old guys like me. :-(

OK, I can get to the screen where I Create Storage Space, but it requires that the drives be clean. Hey, I have data on these drives! How the heck am I supposed to get them recognized by WIn 10 w/o destroying the data?

OK, I can put each one in slot 0 and suck off the data to some other HD. The problem is that I don't HAVE enough HD space to do this!

Can anyone suggest a good way to proceed?

Conflicting information on my Storage Space...

From disk management, it does report the same storage and used space as from explorer.
May I ask did you try to create a storage pool or something ? if so, you should not mess with this.

Is this disk an external disk connected via USB ? WD or Seagate branch ?

I have the feeling that this disk is formatted with GPT type using 512K emulation so Windows get confused. To verify:

    1. Right click on Disk 6 ->Properties->Volumes. What does it show on partition styles ? GPT ?
    2. Download Best Free Partition Manager for Windows | MiniTool Partition Free, install then run. What does it show on disk 7 ? MBR ?

If step 1 shows GPT and step 2 shows MBR then definitely the disk was formatted using 512K emulation. The reason they did this so that it would be recognized by WinXP or if you connect it to a TV.

Windows Updates failed is another problem you have. First, it tried to updates from 1703 -> 1709 and failed so any subsequent updates to 1803 also failed.

    Storage Spaces is confusing! Help?

    Hi Chuxter,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

I understand your concern, however I suggest you to go to Disk management and check if the drives are available.

    • Press Windows key + X.
    • Select Disk Management and check the free storage.

I suggest you to perform Hardware and Device Troubleshooter.

    • Click on Start icon or hit
      Windows logo
      and click on Settings.
    • Type Troubleshooting and select
      troubleshooting.
    • Click on Hardware and Sound and select
Hardware and Devices and click on next and follow the on-screen instructions.
Before cleaning your drives make sure you take a backup of it. You can transfer your stuffs to One Drive.
