Windows 10: SSD not working on AMD based motherboard USB 3 ports

Is anyone aware of USB driver issues on AMD based motherboards? I've been a die hard Intel loyalist but finally built an AMD based system for a friend. I have a problem with a USB SSD drive not working on any of the USB 3 ports on the system.

Symptoms:When I plug the SSD into a USB 3 port, the drive letter may take a very long time to show up (30 seconds plus), although it will sometimes show up quicker. After it finally shows up it may disappear and then reappear again repeatedly. The SSD has 4 partitions and behavior is the same on all partitions. In any case, I can never access the drive from File Explorer (or anything else for that matter). This behavior is the same for ALL USB 3 ports on the system. If I connect the SSD to a USB 2 port it will work perfectly. Also, note that the SSD is bootable. I can boot from the SSD just fine when connected to USB 3 and it is perfectly fine when when I have booted from it.

System Specifics:MSI X570-A Pro Motherboard AMD Ryzen 3900X CPU The SSD in question is a Samsung NVMe SSD in a generic USB 3 enclosure. SSD works fine on every Intel system I have ever tried it on, this is only AMD based system I have ever tried. Windows Version 2004Latest chipset drivers from MSI are installed.

Things Tried:Tried other devices in the USB ports. Thumb drives, hard disks, WiFi adapters, etc. All other devices, both USB 2 and USB 3, work just fine. Checked BIOS setting - there is an XHCI enable / disable. I know that this should be disabled for Win 10, but I tried both ways with no difference. Also tried CSM both enabled and disabled, again, no difference. Uninstalled all USB ports from Device Manager and allowed Windows to redetect / reinstall them. As noted earlier, booting from the same SSD works just fine so I am suspecting some sort of issue with the drivers. Anyone else see issues like this?

USB 3 Ports not working

Hi folks,
i was trying to copy some files from an external drive using the usb 3 port on my M/B but it doesnt work, i downloaded the drivers from the Manufacturers website but no luck either, am i missing an important step here? i havent checked the Bios yet

Update KB4015438 broke all my USB 2 ports on my motherboard. USB 3 are fine.

Hi all,

I have windows 10 set up to defer updates and I noticed that there was a update that needed a restart. After the restart my mouse wasn't working I then realised that all the 4 black USB 2 ports on the back of my motherboard were not working any more. The
6 blue USB 3 ports are fine thankfully.

The update that caused the issue was the following;

Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB4015438)





I checked my Motherboard BIOS and all the ports are enabled as normal.

Looking in Device Manager I got the following error.





I tried updating the driver but that didn't help and also uninstalled and reinstalled the driver sadly that didn't help either.

For now I can move my mouse and TrackIR to the USB 3 ports and I have another 4 working USB ports on the front of my case 2x USB 3 and 2x USB 2.

Anyone else experience this?

At the time of the update I had the following things plugged into the USB ports that no longer work;

1. TrackIR 5

2. Thrusmaster T.16000M Joystick

3. Razer Mamba 2012 Mouse

4. Astro A50 Mix Amp

Hopefully uninstalling the update will fix the issue as it happened after the update.

USB Port Oddities


Ok, let's see it with pictures step-by-step. First right-click on the USB device and select Update driver software:





Then select Browse my computer for driver software (LAST option) :





The select Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer (LAST option) :





Then select the standard driver from the list and click next:





Click next/OK as required to complete installation. Repeat the steps for all Intel USB devices. Finally click on each USB root device and press DEL to delete it, reply YES when asked. After deleting all USB root devices restart the computer.
