  1. HP PC Reset Problem

    Hi

I am trying to help out a neighbour who has a problem on their PC. The PC was originally shipped with Windows 7 Home but was upgraded, when the free upgrade option was available form Microsoft, to Windows 10 Home.

They had a problem with their wifi device vanishing after the Microsoft update in September so decided to do a PC reset. They then contacted me when it got to the following state.

The PC will boot to a Windows wallpaper screen but neither the keyboard or mouse will work. There is no dialogue boxes on the screen. The keyboard and mouse both work when you access the maintenance menus so are both fine.

The PC appears to be stuck part way through its reset process as the drive has the following partitions and has X: drive prompt if you access the drive from the command prompt using the maintenance menus.

    Name Type

Drive 0 Partition 2 OS Primary

    Drive 0 Partition 3 <No name> OEM Reserved

    Drive 0 Partition 4 HP_RECOVERY Primary

We've been through all the maintenance menu options and nothing allows us to progress to fix this. There are no restore points as its been reset and did't want to wipe the partitions, and reinstall from files from another PC, as not certain the Windows 10 activation will be found. They assure me their data has been saved onto an external hard drive.

I can boot using Sysrec, and mount the partitions, but without know what may need a helping hand to get it to complete the reset process I don't want to start changing files. Ideally would like to get it to complete the reset without having to hack things about :

Thanks for your help and guidance

    Martyn

    :)

router logs DoS attack from a local PC....

Well you did not say that you don't really know what you are doing. It's not a problem of course, but it changes things a little.

It's not even clear if the PC or the router is the problem at this time, so I suggested that you disable some unnecessary things which are usually known to cause many problems, sorry if those were too complicated.

    • You could reset some network related stuffz on the PC as a next step. Open an elevated command prompt (run as administrator), and enter the followings on the PC:
      netsh int ip reset reset.log
      netsh int ipv6 reset
      netsh winsock reset
      netsh branchcache reset
      netsh advfirewall reset
(note: You can export your current firewall rules in the "group policy" before the reset if it's needed for some reason)

    • Btw, Would it be a problem to reset the router to the default settings if the things we are trying will not help? There is a menu point for that called "factory settings" (and also a little hole on the back if you prefer that one).. the Administrator username in the router after the reset would be admin and the password is probably on a sticker at the bottom of the router (special settings needed to go online with your ISP might be also necessary)
This is not needed now (not yet), but perhaps the source of the problem is at the router and not the PC in question, so we may come to that eventually.
ps.: Do you have a second network card you could test in that PC and a different cable to rule out some hardware issues on the PC side?

How to factory reset Cisco 1700 Router

Hopefully I can help you here....its a very common thing to happen.

First, I take it you dont know the passwords for console access or telnet/ssh?

I will assume that these devices belong to you.

step 1. Plug a cisco console cable into a serial port on your pc
step 2. Plug other end into Cisco console port
step 3. Using hyperterm or putty or similar connect to the serial port
step 4. boot router, and make sure you clearly can see the output (this confirms you have good serial comms)
step 5. if this fails, adjust the comm port settings (9600, 8,1,n are the default)
step 6. now you have to do the only hard part...send the break command:

    Break command list: Break Commands

Go down the list and match your OS and SW and try the sequence suggested.

If this fails several times do what I do: Install putty (free) and then to send a break so you can get into rommom just hit "ctrl-a b".

  4. HP PC Reset Problem

After reset it's only the openning page with +hp

To perform a clean reset on the IPAQ 1950 and return you HP iPAQ to factory settings:

    • Press and hold the Calendar and iPAQ Wireless buttons.
    • While holding down these buttons, use the stylus to lightly press the Reset button on the left side of the HP iPAQ for about two seconds.
    • When the HP iPAQ screen begins to fade, release the Calendar and iPAQ Wireless buttons first, and then remove the stylus from the Reset button.
    • Plug the device into the AC Adapter or press the Reset button again.

The HP iPAQ resets and powers on.

I think you might be missing that last step 4.
