Updated Windows, unable to change read / write access!

    Full title:

Updated Windows (from 1809 to 1903), dealing with inability to change permissions, read and write access on an older, corrupted instance of Windows I kept around for game storage!

Yeah I ended up dealing with OS corruption and luckily had a back-up that I fell back on and kept the rather large 2TB M.2 NVME drive around as a secondary drive as I didn't feel like reinstalling hundreds of gigabytes of games worth of data and I just kept them in their original locations, i.e. KUpdated Windows, unable to change read / write access! :programFiles (86) > Steam > Steamapps > Common etc.

This morning I attempted to reinstall a game to a similar directory (Origin Games) and was told that I couldn't do that because the folder is ready access only. Attempting to uncheck the read only checkbox and it's simply reverted when you close the window. I've already spent 3 hours with this and I've tried manually changing the permissions and I've tried two separate programs, TakeControl Pro and Take Control EX that are not working.

What are my options here, it seems this is a TrustedInstaller problem because TrustedInstaller still thinks that this is a working instance of the operating system even though it's on a completely different drive path (K).

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!

    :)

Unable to access (read and write) USB flash drive in Windows 10

    Hello,

Thank you for your response. I already looked into one of your suggestions before posting here. I am the owner of the folder and its sub folders etc. When I changed it to everyone, nothing was changed. File explorer is still giving me an access denied error
whenever I do anything with the folder.

For one of the flash drives that I have, I was able to use it to an older version of windows which is windows 7, but when I try to open it here. It does not work at all (can't open, read, and write). But in that workstation (with windows 7 installed), there
was no problem reading and/or writing a file.

I think it has something to do with windows 10. But not quite sure where can I do changes and how to fix this. Or it is possible that you're right that the permission settings can change when used from another computer but why does it still not work even
when I format it in a windows 10 pc.

Is there a specific Disk Management\Partition program that you can suggest for formatting a flash drive?

Thanks for your help! I appreciate your time responding!

Slow HDD read and write speeds

    Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

    • In which device are you facing this issue?

However, you can Disk Defragment on your computer to optimize the drive. To run Disk Defragment please follow the steps from the article

    Defragment your Windows 10 PC
    .

Alternatively, you can check for the read and write speed of the HDD in task manager. Please follow the steps mentioned below to check the read and write speed of the hard drive:

    1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc key together on the keyboard.
    2. Click on Performance tab.
    3. Click on Disk 0.
    4. You will find the Read speed and
      Write speed
at the bottom of the window.

    Hope it helps.
