Updating to 20H2 - my experience

I waited until now for the Windows Update to 20H2. Since nothing appeared so far, I decided to do it anyway. I chose to use the Windows 10 Update Assistant. I took the precaution of having made in image backup and also disabling all my third party antivirus and malware software.

The Windows 10 Update Assistant was installed and after it checked my system and found it alright for an update from v.2004 it proceeded to install 20H2. The process was quite long as I found. It took almost one hour, but the follow up tasks lengthened the time to about two and a half hours.

The update must have done an -in place upgrade because I saw that it ended with a Windows.old directory. Also when I logged in to each of my three accounts on this laptop I was greeted with a "Hi" message, updates were automatically made - you know the "we've got some updates for your PC..." procedure took place. I don't know why this is necessary for each account on the laptop.

There was a problem on startup with an error about "Bridge.Server.exe" not found, but I solved it by resetting Cortana.
Also "a problem was encountered" and my default programs fro PDF and HTML files were reset by Windows. This however must have been temporary, because I saw it on my Local Administrator account. When I logged in to my standard user account the previous defaults applied as they also applied after I logged back in to the Local Administrator account.

There were updates for the .NET Framework and a Cumulative Update preview (KB4580364) which probably replaced the ones that were installed for v.2004 earlier.

I was surprised to find out that the Media Creation Tool which I used later to create a Windows installation disk (DVD) did not warn me from the start that there would not be enough space to do so. I resorted to creating the installation media on a USB disk.

Overall the experience for me was long with a few surprises, but no serious problems. All in all I would have preferred to have done it the way others already did, through Windows Update.

    :)

Update History is not showing v.20H2

    Hi Dominic

I am Dave, an Independent Advisor, I will help you with this . . .

This is normal behavior in Windows 10, typically when you install a Feature Update like 20h2, the update history is wiped, this is to prevent the user from trying to uninstall an update that was prior to the Feature Update, which would de-stabilize Windows
10, the list should start building again, when some updates are applied to version 20h2 . . .

geforce experience takes an age to load..

Well that's why I asked. Mine is on SSD and takes 11 seconds. Your list of games will not appear if it has not checkd for updated suggested settings for awhile until it checks.

When it says it is refreshing the game list, it is checking, because NVIDIA periodically updates suggested settings. Plus it will look for those for new games you have installed.

So, the less it is run, the slower it will be.
