"Not enough space on Documents" to transfer files onto a 1 tb external drive or even to Videos

    Hi,

So when I try to move some video files onto an external hard drive 1 tb from a folder in Documents, I could move five of the sub-folders within the main folder in Documents. The layout is as follows:

    Documents

    > Class Lectures

    > Lecture 1

    > Video Lecture pt 1

    > Video Lecture pt 2

    > Lecture 2

    > Video Lecture pt 1

    > Lecture 3 etc.

When I try to move a Lecture folder into the external drive, a dialogue box appears and says, "There is not enough space on Documents. You need an additional X GB to copy these files." I've tried selecting individual video files and moving them didn't work, the message then said "There is not enough space on Class Lectures. You need an additional X GB to copy these files.", tried selecting the Class Lectures folder and clicking Move To and selecting the external drive, and selecting multiple Lecture folders and moving them to the drive, but I always get the same message about inadequate space on Docs. I tried clicking "Try Again" and 1 second later I got the same message again.

I can move Word Docs and images onto the drive, it seems like it's just videos, at least my lecture videos.

I tried to move the Class Lectures folder to Videos, and the message popped up again.

Can anyone help me troubleshoot this? My laptop storage is nearly full which is why I'm trying to move my lectures onto another storage device.

    Thank you!

    :)

Transfer of files to external drive

On my Windows 10 laptop, when I try to copy a 60GB folder from my hard drive to an external drive (to back up), I get a message that the external drive has only "15" GB of free space, which is not enough to transfer the folder. In reality, the external
drive has more than 1 TB of free space available (when viewed independently in Window Explorer). Actually, the number "15" is the same as free space on the hard drive. In other words, while transferring a folder, windows mistakenly views free space on hard
drive as free space on external drive. This happened only in last week or so (it worked fine for 2 years until then). Note that this happens even with other external drives, and even using different USB ports.

  3. My data folders (Documents, Pictures, Videos, Music, etc) are on DRIVE E: not Drive C:

I THINK the programs are looking in the wrong place.

All my Programs are stored on Drive C:

Drive D: is my Recovery Image

Drive E: is where all my Data files were stored (Documents-Pictures-Videos, etc).

    Drive F: has: Clipart-Document Themes 14-Media-MSOCache-Office 14 - Stationery - and Templates.

Hewlett Packard set my computer system up.

Before I did what you suggested above about MOVING files - I had only one listing for Drive E"Not enough space on Documents" to transfer files onto a 1 tb external drive or even to Videos :(DATADRIVE1-Docs-Pics-Video-Music). Now Drive E: shows up listed under THIS PC as E:\ (and it contains ALL my data - docs-Pics-Video-Music)). All these data
folders also show up listed under THIS PC in the DOCUMENT folder; AND, all the datat folders also show up in DATADRIVE1-Docs-Pixs-Music-Video!!!! Whatever happened when I moved the files caused them to appear in several places!

I don't think the programs know where to find anything!!!! DUD!

I also have 4 external Western Digital hard drives (but I don't have all of them plugged in simultaneously). My problem with the external hard drives is that now Windows does recognize my 6 TB one - I know it is working because the little light is on and
blinking....the drive just does not show up in File Explorer.

    Do you have any suggestions?
