Hard drive test completed, but with read failure.

Hello everyone, for the past few days my computer has been acting very slow and the disk usage never goes over 50%. I ran a test using "GSmartControl" and it showed the results of the test as "Completed with read failure" I check another tool to be safe and the health of it shows as "Caution". I don't know what to do. I ran chkdsk from CMD and ran the scan from the C:\ disk menu. What should I do now?

    Build number is (2004) 20262.1010

    :)

Windows 7 Hard Drive Failure Notice

Thanks! We ran the Dell PSA Diagnostics which did indicate the hard drive test was unsuccessful. One suggestion made was to update drivers and firmware - I don't see how outdated ones would cause a hard drive failure, but is that possible?

    Possible External Hard Drive Failure

You can download free software that will test the SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology) on your external drive. Most hard drive manufacturers provide their own free version of this HDD testing software.

For example if your hard drive is a Seagate, google 'Free application to test Seagate Hard drive SMART' and thi will return the SeaTools app supplied by Seagate . . .s

Basically the above is your best option as it will test the life left in your hard drive . . .

You could also run a simple test using Windows, which would check your drive for errors, but it will not check the SMART on your hard drive:

    • Open a Command Prompt window as administrator
    • Run this command and let it complete (replace c with the drive letter of your external drive):
    chkdsk c: /f

Note: you could also run a more complete test in Command Prompt - but it could take hours, sometimes days (replace c with the drive letter of your external drive):

    chkdsk c: /r

    Identifying a hard drive failure.

Hi Clifford, your reasoning is sound with regards to the Toshiba logo, that is BIOS posting from the CMOS chip . If there was failure on your motherboard or any other major component, POST would not complete . . .

When you were restored Windows, was that from a USB flash drive, did that start very slowly or did that take an awful long time to install. If so, there may be an issue with your hard drive . ..

If not, and I suspect not, this is just a problem with your Windows installation. If you just restored or reset Windows 10, I would suggest a full clean install would be best and then when you get your system running, you should run a SMART test on your hard
drive to check that out . ..
