System reserved partition (SRP) is full, needs cleaning

A couple years ago I was trying to get WIndows Backup & Restore working, but it wouldn't because the SRP was full. I found a way at the time that with a few commands (either in CMD window or Powershell) that quickly cleaned out this hidden garbage once you assigned a drive letter in Disk Management. Fixed the problem at the time.

Now Windows Update wants me to go to 2004. OK, I waited long enough. Failed quickly with little clue. Tried then with the 20H2 .iso, this time I got the message that the SRP is full. Win 10 Pro, running 1909. Only 4meg free on SRP, yet treesize says it is only half full (50mb). I cannot remember the commands that clean up this absurd mess. I'm not extending, recreating, because none of that should be necessary.

Anyone know the commands that fix this?

    :)

  2. Error: We couldn’t update system reserved partition, when trying to update Windows 10

    Hi Teresa,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

I understand that you are facing issues with upgrading to Windows 10 from Windows 7. For further clarity on the issue, please respond to the questions below.

    1. What is the make and model of the PC?
    2. How much free space do you have on your PC?

The System Reserve Partition (SRP) is a small partition on your hard drive that stores boot information for Windows. Some third-party anti-virus and security apps write to the SRP, and can fill it up.

Depending on the type of the disk that you are using, I would suggest you to refer the section
Windows 7 or 8/8.1 with GPT partition or Windows 7 with MBR partition from the article

“We couldn’t update system reserved partition” error installing Windows 10

After following the above steps you should be able to upgrade your PC to Windows 10.

Let us know how it goes.

    Hi,

The System Reserved Partition (SRP) may be full that's why you are having issues backing up your computer. We suggest using Disk Cleanup to to remove the temp files in
System Reserved Partition (SRP). Kindly follow the steps below:

    • Search for Disk cleanup from the taskbar and select it from the list of results.
    • Click on Clean up system files button.
    • Go to the More options tab, and click Clean up button under System Restore and Shadow Copies section.

Let us know if you have any other questions.

"We couldn't update the system reserved partition" error at Win10

    Jane,

The link you suggested is regarding the upgrade from the earlier versions of Windows. I currently use Win10. Besides I posted my harddrive current status.

If you have a recipe for Win10, I would appreciate it.
