Windows 10: USB microphones not working properly

Think this question has been asked some times in the past but without a satisfactory answer.


I bought a USB microphone Tonor TC-777 and found that it worked very poorly on my laptop ASUS Vivobook S14 with Windows 10. The recording volume is extremely low even at maximum level, at which point it's also very noisy and bad. Thinking it was the microphone, I returned it and ordered another one from a different brand, the Snowball iCE. But I found this one has the exact same problem. The recording volume is extremely low and the microphone is basically useless. Clearly the problem is not the microphones, but the computer itself.


From reading about the subject, it seems like this is a recurring issue with Windows 10 drivers for USB audio. Is there a solution to this? It's completely ridiculous that I can't seem to get any microphone to work with these drivers.

Microphone not working properly after upgrade to 1803

After upgrade to 1803 my microphone is not working properly. I googeld and found many times this answer:

1. Hit Windows key and search for "microphone privacy settings"
2. Hit "Allow access to the microphone on this device"
3. Switch "Allow apps to access your microphone" to ON

Among the apps that are showing is Edge. There the mike is working, but on chrome and my games microphone is not working

 

Microphone not working properly after upgrade to 1803

I had the same issue when I upgraded to 1803 on the Insider Program. I tried everything, the privacy settings. I even removed the driver and software. Reinstalled drivers and software, same problem.

I know this is probably not a solution you want to hear, but I clean installed the April update using the MCT. I booted to the USB flash drive it created and installed from there. Now my microphone works properly.

Normally in a situation like this, some would suggest a repair install. You can try this if you do not feel like clean installing.

Hopefully someone else will have another suggestion before you have to resort to this.

This issue could have happened due to settings of your Microphone. To resolve your issue, we suggest that you check your Microphone is not disabled and set as default. You can follow these steps to check your microphone settings:

• Right click on the volume icon and select “Recording devices”.
• Now, right click on an empty space and select, “Show disconnected devices” and “Show disabled devices”.
• Select “Microphone” and click on “Properties” and make sure that the microphone is enabled.
• You may also check if the microphone that you are using is set as default.
