  1. Start Menu shortcuts look jammed and are not functional

So, just opened the Start Menu and it appears my shortcuts are blued out; the icons and the names don't appear. Instead of the name of the file, game, program, I get a bizarre looking link to the directory. Instead of a C:/... which would be reasonable (albeit, not how the Start Menu should look), I get a W~C:/.... and clicking on any item doesn't do a thing. Only some basic windows shortcuts are intact, like a Skype or a Pictures shortcut.

    What even?

  2. How to pin shortcut to start menu.

At first, you can create a shortcut in your Programs folder
(in a hidden folder C:\Users\xxxx\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs). The shortcut appears in
All apps list. Then you can pin it to Start menu / Taskbar as Mayank Gupta10 suggested.

The common way is to create a shortcut on the Desktop.
But the more elegant way is creating Custom toolbars.

How to pin shortcut to start menu.

Sergiy Shklyar - You are a genius. This is the solution for pinning a non-executable to the Start Menu. Many thanks.

What a PROPER start menu should look like

    Hi there

Was just suggesting that the logical place for a search function is surely at the TOP of a list - as W10 is still in "Design phase" I can't see anything wrong in making suggestions that could be popular. The fact that I was showing a Linux start menu was irrelevant -- just giving an example where the search is at the logical place at the TOP of a list.

Surely when an OS is still in some sort of design stage this is the time to suggest what I would imagine to be a sensible logical improvement.

    Cheers
