Windows 10: Blue screen of death during boot

Automatic repair locks up on blue screen. “Your PC did not start correctly”.



Gigabyte GAZ77M-D3H motherboard



Intel core i5 3570K



Above are 8 years old and have never had any firmware updates.



I attempted to overclock i5 which produced a very small increase in speed using Gigabytes Automatic overclock and a message about updating motherboard firmware.



The m/c then stood idle for several hours and on my return I was confronted by the Blue SoD.



I tried many resets and many cold boots, all of which gave the same blue SoD.



Ctrl-Alt-Del does not work from SoD.



Boot interrupted with F9 gave me system info-

F12 gave me “select boot drive” which was frozen and unusable.



DEL gave me “Bios setup” which was also frozen.



What to do?



It seems to my uneducated brain that the error is probably in the boot routine. Is it software, firmware or hardware? The error occurs before the option to select the boot drive, so a start-up DVD would be useless, even if I had one.



If I went for a new motherboard and CPU, is it possible that these would be corrupted by information currently on my hard drive? If so, could I delete all the info on the C: drive SSD in another computer and start over? I assume my 2TB mechanical E: drive will not be affected.



Fortunately I installed Ashampoo backup which does incremental backups weekly. I just have to find out how to do a restore!



Any help will be welcomed.
