Windows update broken POP server access??

    Hi there,

Im not sure whether or not this is a Windows issue. I initially thought that Norton Security was the most likely culprit, but I can find no evidence that such is the case, so I wonder if a recent Windows 10 update may be responsible

Im being driven mad. Having worked fine for years, a couple of days ago my laptop developed a problem with logging in to POP mail servers. The problem is wide ranging, effecting about 6 e-mail accounts, on three totally different servers, and when using two different e-mail clients.

When any attempt is made from this computer to log in to any of the POP servers, it nearly always fails, with an error message of either (consistent for any one e-mail account) "Authentication failed" or "Invalid password or username". However, with all the accounts and servers, the log-in occasionally works - probably once every 10-20 attempts.

The problem is clearly specific to this one machine, since I have no problem logging into these servers, using the same parameters/credentials, from a different computer.

I personally did not change anything to result in this problem appearing, so it seems probable that something which 'updates itself' might well be the cause - and Norton Security (22.20.5.39) and Windows 10 itself (version 1909) would seem to be the most likely suspects.

I can find nothing relevant in the Norton activity logs or the Windows Event logs. The machine is otherwise working completely as normal. Ive tried temporarily turning off 'Autoprotect' and 'Smart Firewall' in Norton, and that makes no difference.

Any thoughts/suggestions - at least for what sort of things/culprits I should be looking for?

    Kind Regards, John

    :)

Accessing Windows FROM NAS servers -- Windows latest update

    Hi there
can anybody suggest what needs to be done to access windows files FROM Nas servers (running SAMBA). The latest version of windows seems to have broken connections -- now just get message timeout on server when trying to access Windows shares FROM a NAS server.

No problem with windows accessing the NAS server shares (i.e FROM windows TO Nas problem is NAS TO WINDOWS). Computer name is seen in the network map and ping is OK.

people have suggested it's because Windows has depreciated the way it handles SMB connected files (or CIF).

Is there ANYWAY to make this working again.

The crazy thing is that ANDROID devices seem to have no problem -- for example I have some music files on Windows which I access from a Samsung S8 phone via a program called SambaPlayer (VLC for android also works) and play via blue tooth to a small Bose mini 10 speaker.

I need the server to be able to handle Windows files as I run the backups from the server . Even if I run the backups locally on Windows via macrium I'd like the server to automatically upload these files to the server.
Before the last update Windows had no problems -- seems every update or so breaks windows networking.

I don't use logon domains, profiles etc etc --simple HOME network with a few Windows laptops etc.

    Cheers
