    Removing a USB drive without 'ejecting' first

    Hello,

    Normally I eject a USB drive within Windows 10 before unplugging the hardware. I once understood garbage can be left behind when not ejecting first.

    Sometimes ejecting don't work because Windows says it's in use (for no reason according to me). In those cases I shut down Windows or I unplug the USB drive without ejecting first.

    • Is this garbage being left behind in Windows or on the USB drive?
    • How can I remove this garbage afterwards?

    Missing Eject in "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" List

    I use to be able to eject my USB drive via "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" with list as below:

    - Open Devices and Printers
    - Eject Data Traveler 111
    - USB Drive (Dhow do i remove empty drives i can't eject them, i want to see only c and m drive there? :)
    - Eject My Passport Ultra
    - My Passport (Ehow do i remove empty drives i can't eject them, i want to see only c and m drive there? :)

    However recently the "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" list seems corrupted and shows:

    - Open Devices and Printers
    - USB Drive (Dhow do i remove empty drives i can't eject them, i want to see only c and m drive there? :)

    - My Passport (Ehow do i remove empty drives i can't eject them, i want to see only c and m drive there? :)

    with { - USB Drive (Dhow do i remove empty drives i can't eject them, i want to see only c and m drive there? :) } and { - My Passport (Ehow do i remove empty drives i can't eject them, i want to see only c and m drive there? :) } are grayed out.

    Currently the only way for me is go to file explorer and right click the removable drive and click Eject.

    Please help!

    Eject SSD drive efficiently from file explorer

    SSD drives are not eject-able. They have to be physically removed.

    If it is a USB stick then eject will show on the right click list.
